Victoria Falls or Mosi-oa-Tunya (the Mist that Thunders) In 2008, fuel shortages in Zimbabwe, caused by Robert Mugabe's despotic regime there, meant that it was impossible to drive between Zambia and South Africa, through Zimbabwe, without running out of fuel. Consequently, all freight had to find an alternative route. Traffic which had earlier crossed from Zambia into Zimbabwe over the Victoria Falls Bridge was forced to cross the Zambezi river into Botswana at Kasane. Here was no bridge, however, and drivers had to queue for days to get on to one of the two ferries. When one broke down, the queues merely grew longer. |
