PIDGEONs of Stockland, Dorset (now Devon)
|
Stockland is a small village in the Blackdown Hills of south-east Devon, England. Three miles south-west of it lies Cotleigh, another small village where John Pidgeon and Mary Sansome were married in 1793. It is difficult to know where John came from, but it was probably one of the surrounding villages; and he was probably a member of one of the other Pidgeon families in the area. All the children and many of the grandchildren of John and Mary were born in Stockland. However, their eldest son James crossed the county border into Dorset to marry Hannah Rowe in the village of Wootton Fitzpaine. Some of his descendants remain to this day in the Lyme Regis corner of Dorset, although others have crossed back into Devon and reside in or near Axminster. Some of the descendants of John and Mary have moved further afield to places such as Hampshire, Kent, Birmingham and even Australia. However most still continue to live in the Devon and Dorset area (and a few over the border in Somerset) in many of the smaller towns and villages. To simplify the information on the tree below, the county name is not indicated for these places, so the following key may be helpful. It shows which county the various villages belong to. It also lists the registration districts, which are used on the tree when the village is unknown. For example, most of the Dorset villages on the tree are in the Bridport district, so if information comes from a registration of a birth or death it will be shown as Bridport. To complicate matters, Lyme Regis is in the Axminster district. Henry Pidgeon, the younger son of Isaac and Maria Spiller emigrated to Australia when he was 26. He met and married there Sara Bishop, another immigrant from Cambridgeshire. After about 5 years in Tiaro, Queensland, (120 miles north of Brisbane, near Maryborough) they settled about 40 miles north of Maryborough in Bundaberg and many of their descendants remained in this area, although some moved further north to Cairns and others south to New South Wales. Again for convenience, the following table also lists relevant places in Queensland and the Australian section of the tree is coloured green. Main contributor: Basil Pidgeon. Additional contributions from Barbara Grant, Michaela Demkiw and David Oswald Notes: ab. = about, b. = born, bp. = baptised, bu. = buried, d. = died, m. = married, + = extramarital relationship. |
