In the 17th century there were two Pidgeon families living in the villages of Stanton and Shawbury, both lying close to the present-day A53 north-east of Shrewsbury and about 2 miles from each other. To what extent they were already related in not known at the moment, but it would seem highly likely that they were. In any event, they were united, if not reunited, by the marriage in 1736 of William Pidgeon from Shawbury and Henrietta Pidgeon from Stanton. It is unlikely that William and Henrietta were first cousins, but they were probably second, third or fourth cousins. The name of Allen appears in both families - a name which is extremely rare in other Pidgeon families of the time. The initial research for these families was contributed by Carol Oakley, with additional information from Sue Barson and the family of Bruce Delabere PIDGEON in New Zealand. Bruce was a keen member of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand, but died suddenly in 2002 while returning from an international Bugatti rally in Canterbury, England. Notes: ab. = about, b. = born, bp. = baptised, bu. = buried, d.
= died, m. = married, + = extramarital relationship.
The following Stanton tree is quite short, because little is known about
them. |

Although these Pidgeons originally lived in Shawbury, there were a few baptisms which took place in Wem, which lay about five miles from the village. The church at Wem would be much larger than the village church, and the extra space might have been useful for accommodating the friends and relatives of both families, particularly for the christening of the first or second born sons. The marriage of William Pidgeon of Shawbury to Henrietta Pidgeon of Stanton was held at Norton-in-Hales, which is about 13 miles from the two villages beyond Market Drayton. These Pidgeons were not averse to travelling some distance for a special occasion, but we may never know why they chose this small village for their wedding. After the marriage of the two Pidgeons, their children and
grandchildren remained in that part of Shropshire throughout the 18th
century. But one of their grandsons, Allen Pidgeon, married (in
1798) and settled in Lilleshall, between Newport and Telford. This
was the beginning of the industrial revolution. Up until this
time, without evidence to the contrary, we can only assume that the
Pidgeons worked on the land. But now they were marching with
the times, working in the developing industries and mines. From
Lilleshall, one family moved to Willenhall, near Wolverhampton, while
another went even further to Halifax, Yorkshire. Yet another first moved
via Anglesey to Liverpool, whence several members emigrated to New Zealand. |
