The Pigeons of London

Henry Pigeon was a distiller of wines and spirits in the borough of Southwark, south of the River Thames.  He married Mary Smaley at Westminster in 1753 and they had at least two sons.  The elder, another Henry, carried on with the distilling business after his father retired, as did his son Henry and also his grandson Henry.  However, the fifth Henry in this line became a Barrister.  It would appear, from various articles published in the London Gazette throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, that the Pigeons found distilling quite profitable, but as the family became richer they looked elsewhere for fulfilment.

In the early 18th century the family lived on Clapham Common, but the fourth Henry Pigeon bought a property at Furzdown, Hampshire.  His son the barrister, after his first wife died aged 26 years, married Edith Marion Barnes at Sandown on the Isle of White.  However in 1901, after 6 children and many years of alleged drunkardness, cruelty and adultery with one Hannah Barnes (Edith’s sister?) Edith took Henry to the High Court and divorced him.

A daughter of the third Henry, Catherine, married into the Fowler-Jones family;  George Fowler Jones, an architect, was born in Scotland, but the family lived at York.  One branch of this family now lives in Chile.

Other descendants of Henry and Mary live near Brighton and in New Zealand.
