James and William Pidgeon were two stone-masons living in Ilchester, Somerset in 1841 probably brothers. William Pidgeon married Anne Grinham or Greenham at Ilchester in 1808. In later censuses both James and William claimed to have been born at Ilchester, but we cannot be sure of this, and we have no idea who their parents were. Masons appear in several generations of the family.
William and Jane had at least five children, that we know about. First came three daughters, Ann, Elizabeth and Maria. We know nothing about the first two, but Maria married a butcher, John Pitt, and her family remained in Ilchester. The eldest son, Nathaniel, was a plasterer and went to London, where he met and married Ruth Stagg. They first lived at Clerkenwell, but the family later moved out to Plumstead; a grandson of Nathaniel emigrated to Australia. William & Janes younger son, Joseph was a mason and he went to work in the quarry at Clifton, Bristol, where he met and married Charlotte Thorn. This was the family which lived in and around Bristol for many years, and was responsible for this tree being originally known as the Bristol (2) tree.
