Pidgeons of Great Yarmouth

When the eighteen year old King Henry VIII came to the throne in April 1509, one of his first acts was to grant a pardon to most of the prisoners in the country’s gaols.  But a few were specially excluded from the pardon, one of them being “Pygon of Yarmouth”.  Rather than being a common sheep thief, it is likely that his crime was political, one theory being that he had started a riot.  However, it is evidence that the Pidgeon family has been in Great Yarmouth for at least 500 years.  [Thanks to the late Trevor Pidgeon for this piece of research.]

It is not certain that Simon Pigeon and John Pigeon, shown at the head of this family tree, were brothers.  But as they both married in the village of Heigham in consecutive years, it is highly possible that they were.  Neither is it certain that Simon Pigeon who married Martha Moor was the son of Simon Pigeon and Barbary Gedge, but the timing of the later marriage relative to the earlier one makes it possible – and Heigham is only a few miles from Great Yarmouth, where Barbary died.  So, although these two connections are assumptions, they could well be valid ones.

This tree was originally two trees, descending from Nicholas Bell Pidgeon (1755-18??) on the no.2 branch and Joseph James Pidgeon (1801-1879) on the no.3 branch, but superb research by Alison Pidgeon has connected them together.  After Nicholas Bell Pidgeon’s younger brother William was widowed in 1799 he remarried a year later Elizabeth Davy (nιe Allington).  Another  year later, William and Elizabeth were blessed with twin boys, one of whom they christened James.  But after William and Elizabeth and their daughter Judith all died in 1806 the twins were farmed out to relatives.  When Joseph married Elizabeth Sheppard in Great Yarmouth in 1823 he was described in the parish register as “of St Giles, London”, although census records say he was born at Great Yarmouth.  There were no Pidgeons living in St Giles, but there were Bells and Shepherds, possibly relatives with whom Joseph could have lived.

Nicholas Bell Pidgeon and his son Nicholas Hillson Pidgeon were both shipwrights (probably ship’s carpenters) of Great Yarmouth, a tradition which was passed down at least another two generations.  This required an apprenticeship, the successful conclusion of which gave them “the Freedom of Great Yarmouth” and the entitlement to vote in parliamentary elections.  The document which grants the Freedom to Nicholas Hillson Pidgeon (in 1806) has been passed down the generations and is now in the possession of Cyril Edward Pidgeon’s family in New Zealand.  When the younger Nicholas left Great Yarmouth (in 1807) to work in the naval dockyards at Chatham it was the Poll Books of Great Yarmouth which enabled him and his son Joseph to be traced there.  But by 1838, his son Joseph and family were living near the docks in London.

Joseph James Pidgeon and Elizabeth Cook Sheppard and the bulk of their family remained in Great Yarmouth, and it wasn’t until the late 19th century before some of them moved away.  Their sixth child Samuel Sheppard Pidgeon moved to London about 1870 and was followed by some of his younger siblings.

New information has led to the development of another branch of this tree.  George Pidgeon and Jane Balls (on branch no.1) were married in 1793.  Four of their grandchildren emigrated to Australia, where many of their descendants now live.
