Pidgeons of Stockport, Cheshire

Henry PIDGEON, the third son of John PIDGEON and Joan BOWER of Cullompton, Devon [see 1857 Agreement] travelled north to Cheshire and settled in Stockport where he married a widow, Ann BASKETFIELD.  However, it is though that Ann was not a widow when she married Henry, but the mother of an illegitimate son Thomas BASKERVYLE, a fact she wished to disguise.  Her parents were most likely David BASKERVYLE of Goostrey, Cheshire and Ann WASHINGTON, who drew up a marriage agreement before they married in 1765;  the agreement has been in the possession of the Pidgeon family ever since Ann and Henry were married in 1792.  This theory concurs with the thinking of Professor Steve BASKERVILLE, a descendant of the illegitimate Thomas, who was born at Lower Peover, Cheshire in 1786 and who married Sarah DRINKWATER at Great Budworth, Cheshire in 1809.

The majority of Henry’s descendants continued to live in the Stockport area (including Hazel Grove) until about the mid 20th century.   Notable exceptions were (1) the family of his grandson Henry (son of William) which migrated first to Macclesfield in the 1870s and then to Burnley in the 1880s, (2) a great-great-grandson Frank Holt PIDGEON who was reported to have emigrated to Australia but died in Nigeria and (3) a great-great-grandson William Owen PIDGEON who first moved to Kidderminster and then settled in Hertfordshire.
