It is possible (but not proven) that John Pidgeon was born at Cotleigh in 1723, the son of Richard Pidgeon (see The Pidgeons of Cotleigh family tree). At least five generations of John PIDGEONs were millers in Cullompton, Devon. The first John PIDGEON married Joan, the daughter of Thomas and Mary BOWERS. Seven of their nine children survived and married. Their three daughters married into the ELLICOTT, RICE and FACEY families. Two sons were married to the same woman (presumably, the second marrying her after the first had died), while a third son travelled north to Cheshire and sired the PIDGEONs of Stockport. Apart from those of Stockport and the descendants of one great-grandson (including the CANN family) who all emigrated to the USA, most of John & Joans descendants remained in Devon, although no Pidgeons remain there, today. Main contributor: Basil PIDGEON, with additional input from Nola COUPER, Linda BLUM-BARTON and Ruth WILSON. Notes:
ab. = about, b. = born, bp. = baptised, bu. = buried, d.
= died, m. = married, (+) = extramarital relationship. |
