BITM Canal Camp On The Basingstoke Canal
July 26th To August 2nd 2008

This year marks a significant change to our usual camp format, we are hosting WRG Canal Camp 0815, and as a result we will welcome a number of new volunteers to canal restoration. We are running our usual canal camp for Weekend Navvies - those people with families, retired, working full time - who are normally only able to come canal restoring once a month.

WRG BITM is providing a substantial work force for the week. We are inviting you to join us either for a few days or the whole week. Flexibility is the key.

Dates

From July 26th To August 2nd 2008.

The camp will start and finish following canal camp traditions - Saturday to Saturday. However to suit weekenders and the super-keen, we are overlapping the first weekend with our normal Working Party Weekend.

If you are one of our regular volunteers coming for the first weekend - please do not arrive Friday evening. Camp 0813 will still be in residence till Saturday AM. Instead travel direct to site

If you are joining us for the first time please arrive around lunchtime at the accommodation. You will be given a classroom style health and safety briefing followed by a familiarisation tour of the site.

What to expect

The following should give you a taste of what to expect.

Work

Reconstructing the lower wing walls of Lock 22 on the Deepcut Flight of the Basingstoke Canal.

The existing structure will be demolished, and the bank behind excavate back, a foundation trench will be dug and filled with reinforced concrete. Once the concrete has set, the wing walls will be rebuilt on the foundation using concrete blocks to near water line, capped with clay bricks to final design height. Finally back filling with concrete then soil, landscaping the site

Canal Camp 0813 will start work the week before us. Our Camp 0815 will continue from where they leave off

Dumpers will be used to transport building materials to site and there will be an excavator for those heavy lifting jobs.

The camp will offer an ideal opportunity for training, (and for those already trained, practice) on using the plant and machines.

Entertainment

For the evenings we are planning a number of social events. On previous camps we held a Skittles Evening, visited a Brewery, visited a Canal Museum, held a barbecue, and went to the pub a few times, went cruising by boat, went swimming, watched the latest films at the cinema, went tin pin bowling.

We are looking for more ideas for this year’s camp. If you know of any suitable venues or attractions within the Woking, Guildford, Aldershot area please put your ideas forward for consideration.

We are currently looking into a Ghost Night tour of Guildford, Canoeing, Hogs Back Brewery tour, trip on the John Pinkerton and Ten Pin Bowling at the Spectrum

On WRG BITM weekends we sometimes bring a barrel of real ale to the accommodation - normally when the local pub is too far. This proved to be very popular on the previous camps, so we will hope to do the same for this one.
