Materia Medica of
(all) remedies - use
links above

|
The word
'materia medica' originates from the Latin word of 'mater'
which means materials and 'medica' which refers to their
use in medicine, therefore a materia medica translates as
a Book of Medicines. The first Homeopathic Materia Medica
was created by Hahnemann which he called the Materia Medica
Pura, which translates as the Book of Pure Medicines.
For common
first aid purposes it is often enough to only learn one
aspect of the remedy: but have a look at the fuller materia
medica as well as the abridged versions;
e.g. Arnica
in the abridged
Materia Medica is known as the remedy for bruises
and any physical trauma, but read Arnica
from the a-z
list at top and you will see it has a far wider
range of therapeutic use. Do this with the other remedies
that interest you too.
The only way to get
really get to grips with the materia medica is to keep on
studying it.
Start with the 'polychrests'
and 'Basic'
remedies. get to know these in depthby reading different
materia medicas.
The understanding
of materia medica is an ongoing and never ending pursuit
for homeopaths who memorise keynotes and much of the full
materia medica by heart.

NB::
Under
'Dose' in the Matera Medica sometimes recommendations are made
by the original author (Boericke) for physical quantities i.e.
material, unpotentised doses, of remedies. Do not act
on this information unless medically qualified to do so ( it would
be almost impossible anyway to obtain them legally; now all homeopathic
remedies that you can buy are potentised so the problem is purely
hypothetical ). Many
of the substances used when the Materia Medica included on this
site was written are now controlled substances and/or very toxic.
(e.g. Adrenalin, Digitalis) Mostly this section has been deleted
but there may still remain some references to material dose (i.e.
physical, not potentised ). It
may nonetheless be of historical interest - this
advice was written for Medical Doctors and at a time when some
substances were prescribed that are no longer legal (e.g. Opium).
This caution relates
ONLY to material doses, not to potentised doses. Any
potentised homeopathic remedy you can buy from reputable pharmacies
is perfectly safe as it does not contain measurable physical quantity
of any toxic substance. |
