How
to make Homeopathy work -
further study
Homeopathy is a young science
(only 200 yrs old) - and an evolving one.
Its most fundamental principle
will always endure, but individual approaches to case management
may differ and there are even those whose slant on homeopathy
whilst 'unorthodox', is of value because it is clearly thought
out and because it works.
These approaches are listed
not necessarily to recommend or criticise them, but because
they exist. I leave it to the reader to discern the validity
of any methodology, based on their own reading, integrity
and experience.
Some perspectives may still
be properly called
homeopathy while others may not, nonetheless
patients are not cured by definitions but by healing in
whatever form it takes. Be fearless in questioning
and testing your own preconceptions.
If we have done all we can
to find the remedy but either we can't, or it doesn't work,
or we have lost sight of what actually needs treating, of
what constitutes 'the totality' etc., then what to do?
This is the time to look
at the problem from a different angle, step to the side,
stand back, do a jig, get a different perspective, and perhaps
use an alternative methodology. That's what this section
is about - perspectives and methodologies that have been
proven effective by their respective proponents.
Occasionally we can get
locked in to one unproductive perspective (whether
it be rigid classicism or flaccid esotericism), or we may
have so many perspectives that we get locked out;
either way we may not be able to see the wood for the trees.
Most often it is simply a question of reappraising the case
taking or case management but sometimes an entirely new
approach is warranted.
That which effects a cure
may even simply be an opportune comment that results in
a complete lifestyle change, (I've seen that happen!) or
a Flower remedy or just dietary advice, because so much
dis-ease is caused by the physical expression of emotional
disharmony or unacknowledged addictions or bad habits. Yes
- even a comment can be homeopathic! (think about it)
So reassessing our understanding
of a case, stepping 'out of the box' if need be, can help
us reorientate and get clearer overview. In essence homeopathy
is simple, if it becomes complicated then we're missing
something.
Homeopaths can do themselves
and their patients a great service if after learning all
we can about the various methodologies, we study Hahnemann's
Organon of Medicine again (the final, sixth edition), checking
our understanding of what Hahnemann actually taught.
Some homeopaths (surprisingly)
have not actually read the Organon, however returning to
homeopathy's origins after gaining practitioner experience
will yield greater benefits than progressively acquiring
new methodologies or esoteric approaches. This is important
because often what we were taught as being Hahnemann's way,
actually had been passed down by venerable proponants of
zealous but opinioned conviction, or by inventive souls
who added their own interpretation to it.
On the other side of the
coin are those teachings which are no better than chinese-whispers
adaptations of the concept; with the consequent next generation
of students going on to teach a complete mish mash: making
it hard going for those trying to find the way through the
maze of individual interpretations to a sunlit clearing
in the forest of homeopathic philosophy! (hah!) So my recommendation
is; read the Organon (the last, 6th Edition) again, slowly
and with an open and enquiring mind. Don't blindly accept
what others tell you that Hahnemann said or meant; read
what he wrote and decide for yourself. (same goes for Kent!)
This author has often encountered
contradictions between what I had been told Hahnemann
(and Kent) meant and what I have understood his writing
to mean on reading it myeself, (esp. when one is careful
to place his meaning within the context of the time he wrote
in.)
In fact homeopathy is very
simple; just make sure the remedy is homeopathic.
That's it.
