DOSAGE
IN HOMEOPATHY
Dosage in this section refers to constitutional
prescribing, not acutes.
POTENCY CHOICE
The less intense the symptom, the lower the
potency used
The lower the potency the weaker the effect and
the more often it is given
The more intense the symptom, the higher the
potency used
The higher the potency the stronger the effect and
the less often it is given
The greater the physical pathology the lower
the potency
The stronger the mental /emotional symptoms the
higher the potency
The younger the patient the more sensitive
to potency
The older the patient the less able they are to
tolerate high potencies

A single remedy, in a potency that will
complete the cure in one single dose, is
the ideal; but not always possible.
Adjust the potency
up or down in your mind taking the above rules into account,
then apply the frequency of doses (repetition) according
to the rules below:
REPETITION
1x to 5x or 'c' are not so frequently used,
but when they are they're given 3 or 4 times a
day, often for several weeks or months.
6c potency is usually given 3 or 4 times
a day, often for several weeks or months.
the 7c and 9c are prescribed similarly. According to the
French method the 4c stimulates, the 7c regulates and the
9c subdues.
12x or c potency is given twice a day as
are the 18 and 24 potency
30c potency is given once a day or once
a week or just once, depending on the
patients requirements
200c is given as a SINGLE
dose or occasionally as a single collective dose, (eg night-morning
-night)
1M and 10M [and
the higher potencies] are only given as a single dose
There should be no break or change
in dosage once a course has been initiated, it
should be continued as long
as advisd by the homeopath.
SENSITIVITY
Whether
in an acute or chronic state an experienced practitioner
will match the potency to the energy and sensitivity
of the patient and the intensity and pace
of the disease; this is largely a question of experience
Some
people will respond as strongly to a single dose of 6c as
another will to a single dose of 10M, and some people are
so sensitive they can only take the LM potency.
The higher
the potency, the greater response it will elicit from the
system and so the greater the chance of an aggravation but
also the greater chance there will be of a complete cure,
because a higher potency generates a deeper and longer lasting
response from less doses.
A high potency is not given to someone
with bits missing or replaced {ex surgery} or with compromised
organs or deep pathology or who is already on other medications;
as the strong response to a high potency will cause them
discomfort, i.e. an aggravation,
or worse still not improve them at all, or even make them
worse. Where patients are on medications already or if for
other reasons it is necessary to repeat the remedy more
often, then it is given in low potency.
Infirm and
aged patients will not be able to tolerate aggravations
and so when in doubt go low.
If someone needs a high potency due to the intensity of
their symptoms but a high chance of aggravation is
predicted, there are techniques
that can be used to overcome this problem.
An analogy I have used for potency
choice is that of a stone being thrown into a pond; a small
pebble {low potency] is thrown near the edge of the pond
to get small {gentle} ripples to the edge and needs lots
of them to create any impression. A large rock (high potency)
only needs to be thrown once into the centre of the pond
to create larger ripples throughout the pond right up to
the edges; provided there are no other rocks in the pool
the waves will proceed smoothly to the edge.
CAUTION
Never repeat high potencies without very careful consideration.
Unnecessary repetition of high potencies can cause strong
aggravations and/or completely new symptoms (called 'provings'
& not in the DOC).
Some practitioners still advocate following the teaching
of earlier editions of the Organon and advocate repeating
high potencies until an aggravation results - as evidence
that the remedy is 'working'. Continued repetition of any
remedy in high potency will provoke a reaction but this
is not the same as saying the remedy is 'working'. I strongly
recommend avoiding this experimental method which was abandoned
by Hahnemann due to the adverse effects it causes. By following
the prescribing guide-lines on this site you will avoid
the possibility of adverse and unproductive effects
