The remedy Wild Oat belongs
to the group of Uncertainty, as classified by Bach. The other
remedies in this group are Cerato, Scleranthus, Gentian, Gorse,
and Hornbeam. Specifically, Wild Oat deals with lack of motivation
and incentive.
In the Wild Oat state, the
person is not sure as to his purpose in life and feels rather
aimless, wondering about and searching for the unique calling
of his life. One may try different paths or occupations but stays
dissatisfied and not fully motivated, since nothing really seems
to be quite right. The mind may be unsettled and absent-minded,
missing that spark of motivation and incentive which stimulates
and propels forward. The joyful concentration on the tasks at
hand and the wholehearted engagement in one's duties are lacking,
and even play and diversion may not appeal.
This state of disinterest may actually prevent sparks of interest
from developing, since active concentration and receptivity may
be curtailed. A negative feedback loop is created, reinforcing
aimlessness.
This lack of motivation and incentive not only applies to larger
life tasks and important directions of self-realization but also
occurs in regard to one's daily routine of chores and duties.
These may instill boredom, lethargy, and dissatisfaction.
The Wild Oat state may also come on temporarily in those pursuing
their life's work. A sudden disinterest may indicate a one-sided
routine with overemphasis on work and neglect of other important
activities which would break up the daily pattern. Wild Oat will
restore the joy of progress and instill the usual motivation.
In children, when disinterested in play or school, Wild Oat will
stimulate the mind toward joyful interaction and receptivity.
In some forms of mental illness with organic dysfunction and retardation,
this remedy will give maximum motivation and incentive within
the physical limitations (cf. Hornbeam, Mustard).
Emotions accompanying the
Wild Oat state center around frustration, joylessness, aversion,
dissatisfaction, meaninglessness, boredom and futility, and feelings
of being not fully awakened or activated in one's potential. There
is an inner urge for growth which does not quite know how to express
itself and what avenue to choose, and the result of such unanswered
pressure is restlessness and frustration. Or one may have various
ideas and plans and fail to integrate and ground them in reality,
while a visionary longing to make important contributions to society
further distracts from the small, technical details of real progress.
To experience fully and be
aware of those challenges and possibilities uniquely suited to
the self. To give renewed joy of receptivity and response, to
spark interest.
