The remedy Willow belongs
to the group of For Despondency or Despair, as classified by Bach.
The additional remedies in this group are Crab Apple, Oak, Star
of Bethlehem, Sweet Chestnut, Elm, Pine, and Larch. Specifically,
Willow deals with states of resentment and bitterness regarding
one's fate.
In the Willow state, one feels
burdened by an unfavorable, and, as one believes, undeserved fate,
and one seeks the source of such unfairness outside of the self,
blaming others or even fate itself for such misfortune. One fails
to perceive one's own responsibilities in such a state and does
not realize how personal failures and opportunities missed due
to one's own fault have caused such unhappiness. Since self-blame
and regret are unbearable to the self and one refuses to deal
with reality, one fixes the blame onto others and releases internal
frustration and resentment toward them, even though the others
may be blameless.
This unfounded resentment is differentiated from founded resentment
which grows in those who truly have been hurt by another and have
not been able to find justice or satisfying compensation. Unfounded
resentment is based on irrational perception and on emotionally
swayed interpretation of events. In extreme cases, fixed ideas,
delusions, and even paranoia may express the Willow dynamic. Paranoia
is the most intensified blame and accusation brought toward others,
as one feels persecuted and thwarted in one's destiny due to the
fault of others (cf. Beech). In this state, one also projects
one's strongly felt resentments onto others, believing them to
be equally fixated and adverse. Founded resentment, on the other
hand, stems from correct perception of events and is based on
true suffering caused by another, often by someone holding the
advantage of power.
This remedy is of use in all mental disorders involving resentment
and blame, such as in malingering (cf. Chicory), passive aggressive
personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder, and in
disruptive behavior disorders (cf. Holly).
: Emotions accompanying unfounded
resentment range from dissatisfaction and self-pity to self-righteousness,
denial of reality, envy, and lack of sympathy and compassion.
Wrong accusations are brought toward others without further reflection,
while the own self-image is held intact and one feels offended
easily when accused oneself. At the bottom of this dynamic lies
the bitterness and dormant despair felt in a self not fully actualized,
whose true destiny has not been fulfilled. Having missed true
happiness, one also does not want others to experience such joy
and advantage.
Founded resentment, on the other hand, shows genuine sadness and
disappointment; despondency and despair may weigh heavily, should
one be unable to rise above the limiting circumstances. Initially,
one may feel tremendous anger at being mistreated but may have
had to stifle such expression, either out of necessity or by choice.
The locked-in outrage and sense of injustice then turns into smoldering
resentment and sows bitterness, disillusionment, and depression
into the heart. While being in this state, one has to work very
hard, with resolve and willpower, to raise the ability to forgive.
The remedy Willow will make this work easier.
To instill loving forgiveness
and renew the feeling of grace. To live and let live in tolerance
and gain an inner attitude of gentleness and acceptance of others.
