The remedy White Chestnut
belongs to Bach's group of Lack of Interest in Present Circumstances,
together with the remedies of Clematis, Honeysuckle, Wild Rose,
Olive, Mustard, and Chestnut Bud. Specifically, White Chestnut
treats states of preoccupation and intense worry.
In the White Chestnut state,
the mind is preoccupied with worrisome, returning thoughts which
cannot be ruled out and disturb mental peace and clarity. Usually,
these thoughts circle around unresolved and deeply disconcerting
content which evades solution, yet still grips the mind incessantly.
One cannot leave alone those things which worry, even if one wishes
to, and the mental torture continues, fueled by anxiety, helplessness,
and even despair. The present moment loses the power to fascinate
the mind sufficiently to interrupt this pattern; one is caught
within oneself and is distracted from involving spontaneously
with life.
Obsessions, fixations, persistent thought patterns or persistent
delusions, and chronic introspection fall under the healing action
of this remedy. In some of these conditions, the mind has resorted
to automatic thought loops and recurrent compulsive thinking (cf.
Cherry Plum, Crab Apple, Pine).
From the inability to shake
off disturbing worries and preoccupation, the person experiences
anxiety, exasperation, frustration, and exhaustion on top of the
emotional impact of the worrisome content itself. One can get
worked up and desperately fixated onto disturbing content matter
which is beyond one's power to solve, at least for the present
moment. One has a difficult time letting go in faith and trust,
giving oneself to immediate tasks, and allowing for serenity and
clarity to return.
There is awareness that enjoyment and spontaneous devotion to
the present moment are curtailed, and one longs for peace, for
freedom from cares, and for wholehearted focus on others. While
in the White Chestnut state, one may find oneself preoccupied
and introverted as others are trying to communicate. The attention
is diverted, the majority of the focus being turned inward. Disappointment
and annoyance may grow in others and leave the worried person
in regret or self-reproach.
To give clarity and inner
peace, reduce mental intensity and joyless, worrisome introspection;
to set the mind free.
