Vervain belongs to the group
of Overcare for Welfare of Others,
as classified by Bach. The additional remedies of this group are
Rock Water, Beech, Vine, and Chicory. Specifically, Vervain treats
states of overenthusiasm which lead to exaggerated attempts to
convert others to one's own views.
In the Vervain state, the
mind is convinced enthusiastically of certain ideals or ideas
and attempts to live up to them, follow through, and convert others
to them. This heightened incentive may be carried by great strength
of will even in face of stumbling blocks, and internal tension
and drive may escalate, especially when resistance needs to be
overcome. This resistance may be within oneself, as desire to
rest or other attempts at diversion assert themselves, or it may
stem from people who do not readily cooperate, or it may be part
of the difficulty of the endeavor itself.
While everybody has the right to fight for ideals and ideas, others
should not be overly influenced if they do not share equal interest.
In the Vervain state, while being carried by fervency and fanaticism,
one loses sight of this truth. The person is convinced of the
correctness and effectiveness of the pursued ideas and may be
blinded to other opinions and choices.
This remedy is indicated in the treatment of manic aspects within
mental illness. For example, it is of service in bipolar disorders;
in problems with impulse control (cf. Cherry Plum, Holly, Impatiens,
Vine); in delusions and psychoses with excessive fervency, ecstasy
(cf. Clematis), and mania; and in obsessive-compulsive personality
disorder, if there is the tendency to vigorously convert others
to one's perfection-oriented standards (cf. Chicory). Vervain
treats the underlying élan and fervor which give many states
of mental/emotional imbalance the additional impact and force
and carry the psychological dynamic to renewed heights.
Not only mental concepts and
ideas but emotions as well may be carried to great height, fueled
by inner drive and the relentless strength of the center of will.
Excitability, impressionability, and quickly aroused motivation
and fondness for others may stimulate and enrich. For some recipients,
however, excessive joy, exaggerated and unbalanced emotions of
love and friendship may be found overbearing or inappropriate;
or the negative emotions of disgust and rejection may assume fanatical
character. Hysterical mood swings can be carried to extremes by
an underlying Vervain state.
Political fanaticism and outbursts of violence, arising from inner
fervency and attempts to influence others, originate in the Vervain
tendency of the personality. Self-righteousness is usually high,
since one affirms one's goals fully, those often serving the needs
of mankind.
Step by step achieving of
goals, rather than striving for too much at once. Harnessing of
energy and revitalizing of inner calm and nerve power. Tolerance
toward the opinion of others.
