This remedy belongs to Bach's
group For Those who Have Fear, together with the remedies of Mimulus,
Cherry Plum, Aspen, and Red Chestnut. Specifically, Rock Rose
treats states of intense fear and panic, plus a chronically weakened
nervous system.
This is the state of fright
and heightened anxiety when threats and dangers propel to run
or speed, even though it may just happen in one's internal self.
The Rock Rose response is a typical "fight or flight"
response, as the whole organism prepares to either fight and defend
or escape from a perceived threat. Inner agitation and nervousness
can be extreme and undermine health and inner peace, if surfacing
repeatedly.
Usually, the Rock Rose state originates in frightening circumstances
such as the nearness of one's own or another person's death, or
one is overly exposed to specific dangers or work-related hazards.
Frequent nightmares are an indication for this remedy, as well
as fixations and obsessions of a fearful nature, as in phobias
or panic disorders. Here, repeated fearful experiences or one-time
traumas of fright have become linked with a certain person, object,
or circumstance which will trigger renewed fear on contact even
when the real danger has passed (cf. Cherry Plum, Mimulus).
In a chronic state of advanced nervousness, especially if there
is frequent starting and inner trembling, this remedy is the predominant
healer. Prolonged fearful worry, chronic loss of sleep, a hectic,
demanding life can bring on a chronic Rock Rose state, basically
this being an exhaustion of nerve power. Rock Rose is of service
in all anxiety disorders, in post-traumatic stress disorder, and
in adjustment disorder which, in comparison to post-traumatic
stress disorder, is a milder response to a less severe trauma
related to fear or terror (cf. Star of Bethlehem).
While being in this fearful
state, further emotions arising from fear are very intense, carried
by the inner force and speed of the "fight or flight"
response. In regard to fighting, we observe the additional emotions
of anger, hatred, irrational resentment, impatience, whereas the
flight response triggers feelings of helplessness, despair, or
of being caught.
In a chronic case of nervousness, in addition to chronic anxiety,
there may be easily aroused tears, longing for help, desire for
peace and rest, these emotions being characteristic for those
predominantly engaging in the flight response. The fight reaction
will elicit chronic impatience and aggressiveness toward people;
or one may vacillate between the two poles. Usually, irrationality
due to fear and sudden precipitation of emotions are present in
both cases.
To reduce terror in an emergency, give inner peace and calm, instill
courage. To heal chronic anxiety and remove the bad effects of
trauma from fright and shock, to raise health of the nervous system
and subsequently of the whole organism.
