Bach grouped the remedy Larch
under For Despondency or Despair, together with the remedies of
Crab Apple, Oak, Willow, Star of Bethlehem, Sweet Chestnut, Elm,
and Pine. Specifically, Larch treats states of low self-confidence.
In the Larch state, one does
not perceive oneself as capable or successful. One anticipates
failure and feels that one cannot quite measure up to the challenges
of life. For this reason, one may avoid new opportunities for
growth and advancement, and this neglect further instills the
wrong thinking pattern of not being in command and deserving failure.
Next to the perceptual mistake that one is not capable, one also
compares oneself with others, believing everybody else to be more
in charge of themselves and their lives. This further error of
perception undermines the self-image, and the free-flowing expression
of creativity and achievement is hampered. Basically, in the Larch
state, the view into life is refracted and too much directed within
the confines of oneself and one's perceived difficulties, rather
than focused toward the people and tasks in one's environment
(cf. Cerato, Mimulus). Worry about oneself detracts from the true
duty of giving oneself in self-forgetfulness to the service and
advancement of others. Once the importance of the other is understood,
the hampered self is able to flow freely, and the feeling of success
is experienced. Self-confidence is supported further as positive
feed-back lifts the self-image and gives joy of accomplishment.
While being within the confines
of the self and not feeling empowered to rise to life's challenges,
one may experience internal sadness, regret, despondency, and
even despair. In the Larch state, one feels suppressed within
oneself, and it may seem impossible to rise above these limitations,
despite one's despairing wish to do so. Feelings of inferiority,
fear of failure, shyness, and lack of personal strength may hurt
deeply and gnaw at the root of life's happiness. There may also
be a sense of loneliness and alienation from others, since one
retreats easily, not feeling indispensable or as a valuable group
asset. This may be interpreted as not tuning in to people or not
paying them deference.
Larch is also a good helper for those undergoing demanding tasks
and finding themselves intimidated or without confidence only
occasionally. In the Larch state, one may feel lax and dampened,
without energy or incentive. This experience may resemble the
state of depression when there is no real courage or joy of going
forward, of tackling life.
To instill confidence and
raise self-esteem by activating the joy of service. To connect
with the world, to ground the self, instead of being confined
within it.
