The remedy Gentian, together
with Cerato, Scleranthus, Gorse, Hornbeam, and Wild Oat, belongs
to the group of For Those who Suffer Uncertainty, as classified
by Bach. These remedies help those suffering from doubts and uncertainty
in the daily affairs of their lives. Specifically, Gentian treats
discouragement, a lack of faith, and diminished optimism.
The Gentian mind is easily discouraged. As one moves through one's
tasks and life's challenges, one may feel disheartened and ready
to give up as soon as hindrances arise. One retreats from the
situation at hand, thinking circumstances to be wrong or believing
fate is not on one's side, or simply doubting that one is capable
to persevere and be successful. There is lack of inner stamina
and faith, weakened capacity for perseverance, and lack of courage
to give one's all to a task or challenge.
Forcefulness of personality is lacking; the self-assured grip
that tackles life's problems without delay or doubt needs to be
brought forth.
The mind has the tendency to exaggerate, to build minor hindrances
into major ones, to view small setbacks with disheartenment, to
draw the wrong conclusions and foster self-undermining beliefs.
As belief in one's capacities wavers frequently, one also does
not readily trust in the care of a higher power or God.
In the Gentian state, the easily stimulated doubting and disheartenment
weaken enjoyment of life and personal self-assurance. Lack of
faith in oneself and the tendency to give up, even during projects
that may be enjoyable, possibly lead to a diminished fullness
of life, to a lack of interest and stimulation with withdrawal
from challenges and from involvement in the world. Sadness or
depression often accompany this state.
Lack of faith in a higher
power can further reduce the safety feeling and undermine the
assurance of having a handle on one's tasks and life's vicissitudes.
In the Gentian state, one also does not feel grounded or centered
enough, more like superficially touching at things and not fully
sinking into vigorous crafting of one's goals.
: To give faith and encouragement, to invigorate personal trust
in one's capacities and instill perseverance. To ground the self
in a more complete union with accomplishments and daily tasks.
