Prior to 1858, the proving of wills 'probate' was handled by ecclesiastical courts, with jurisdiction in archdeaconries, dioceses of bishops (consistory courts) and provinces of the archbishops of Canterbury and York (prerogative courts, usually abbreviated to PCC and PCY).
