Victorian London Public Institutions

Workhouses, Hospitals, Lunatic Asylums, Prisons, Barracks, Orphan Asylums, Convents, and other Principal Charitable Institutions.

The census night of 8th August 1861 recorded 64,999 people enumerated in London Institutions; 36,924 Males and 28,075 Females. The number of special inmates (paupers, patients, lunatics, prisoners, etc.) totalled 58,090; 34,600 Males and 23,490 Females. Educational Institutions, such as Colleges, Training Colleges, and Schools whether public or private, are omitted from these totals, with the exception of Schools for the Blind, the Deaf and Dumb, and Orphans. Almshouses, Model Lodging-houses, Museums, and Police Stations were also omitted.

If you ever come across a family in a census return where the head of the family is shown as married but their partner is not shown enumerated with them, it is worthwhile looking at the census returns for the Institutions, particularly the Workhouses, Hospitals, Lunatic Asylums, and Prisons.

Places shown in UPPER case letters refer to the Registration District.

The year shown thus [1881] indicates the year of the original reference, thus:
