Victorian London Churches
Congregational Churches

In 1837, nearly all known Congregationalist baptism and burial registers were sent to the General Registrar and in 1840 they were deposited in the GRO on a permanent basis. Registers discovered later were deposited in 1858. The Births Register of the three denominations (Congregationalists, Presbyterians and Baptists) started in 1743/3 by Dr Daniel Williams was also added. All are now held at the Public Record Office at Kew under references RG4, RG5 & RG8, and can be viewed on microfilm at the Family Records Centre, Islington. No surname indexes are available. Some of the undeposited registers have since been published. The earliest registers of baptisms and burials began in 1644, but comparatively few are extant earlier than the late eighteenth century. My Ancestors Were Congregationalists in England & Wales by Cliford, D.J.H. is published by the SoG and lists all the known chapels for the period before 1850 and the location of their surviving registers. Between 1754 to 1837 Congregationlists had to marry in Anglican churches, and from 1837 to 1898 a civil registrar had to be present at weddings in Independant chapels.

The following is a list of the pricipal Congregational Churches in London, frequently called "Independent", with the dates of their foundations shown thus [nnnn]:-
