11 Oct 2006: A small test page has been installed to allow a PDF ebook to be opened and saved if the user so wishes. This needs further work.
06 Dec 2006: Version 8.0 of Adobe Reader has been released and it really looks good. Check it out and enhance your reading experience.
For me reading a good book is on a par to listening to good music and easily beats most other mediums including TV, Videos and DVDs. Hopefully, the computer and internet revolution can add a little to the reading experience.
Two areas that the PC and internet should be able to improve are searching for books and even locating passages. In addition, this revolution should make it easier for people to obtain books (in digital format) and better the facilities found in a conventional library. So let's have a quick look to see whether we are doomed to a future of 'Neighbours' and 'Big Brother' or whether e-Books have anything to offer?
In order to download your PDF books you need to make sure you have Adobe Reader installed on your PC. The latest version can be obtained as a free download from Adobe Systems using the link on this page.
I decided to give Foxit Reader a try which is also free to use, but takes up less than 6 mb of space compared with the 128 mb required for Adobe Reader. Although I use some of the PDF capabilities I found that Foxit is quite a viable alternative. Also, if you use Firefox you do not need any special add ons, you can just change the default PDF reader in Tools, Options, Content, Manage File Types.
Using Adobe Reader you can open up the PDF e-Books here and then choose File, Page Save As to save a copy on your PC. The following are just a small sample selection to show just what can be achieved using the simple tools outlined in the e-Book section. From time to time I will be adding some new titles depending on the response.
