Recycling to make a difference

 

Instead of throwing things away, why not collect them so that they can be reused or recycled? It’s a great way of reducing waste and caring for the world. The following items are now being collected. For more information, contact Rachel Hicks on 01329 312895 or recycling@thehickses.org.uk.

 

Used Stamps:

These are collected by The Leprosy Mission. They are sorted, bagged up and sold to stamp collectors around the world.

 

Coins:

They can be any type of coin – UK or Foreign, old or new. These are also collected by The Leprosy Mission and sold to collectors.

 

Unwanted Spectacles:

These are collected by Vision Aid (through Vision Express). The frames and lenses are used across the developing world – particularly in Africa – to give people with poor eyesight a chance to see clearly again. Without these donations, they would not be able to afford glasses.

 

Old Mobile Phones:

These are collected by a local school who send them off for recycling. The money raised goes towards paying for items that enrich the children’s learning environment.

 

Aluminium Foil:

This must be clean and must be foil. Just because it’s shiny does not mean it’s foil! Use the scrunch test – if it stays scrunched when you open your hand, it probably is, if it unscrunches when you let go, it probably isn’t! This is sold to a metal recycler in Portsmouth and the money is donated to The Well.

 

Plastic Milk Bottle Tops:

These must only be the red, green and blue milk bottle tops (nothing else) and must be clean. They are collected by The Friends of The Earth, and are sold to a recycler who pays good money for them as they are a high quality plastic.
