An example ICT Policy The implementation of this ICT policy will reflect the school's Policy for Teaching and Learning, which it will support and enhance Aim: To develop the ICT capability of each child such that they use ICT confidently, independently and effectively in a variety of context and at the same time gain an awareness and understanding of how ICT affects everyday life and work. Objectives: In order to develop their capability and understanding pupils teachers will ensure that: Pupils are provided with opportunities to experience the use of ICT for a variety of purposes across all subject curriculum areas. I.T. is used to develop pupil's understanding of the processes they are using and encourage them to interpret and apply their results. Pupils use their ICT. experience in a variety of contexts and have the opportunity to work with an increasingly wide and more complex range of applications. Co-operative work and discussion are be encouraged so that pupils are able recognise the value of I.T. in supporting their own work and the role of ICT in every day life. They will be taught to recognise the effects and limitations of IT in solving problems. Children are able to develop skills of logical thinking and planning, and provided with experiences that will enable them to understand the results of their actions. Children's use of ICT. reflects and enriches the themes identified by the National Curriculum and ensures that they demonstrate a progression of skills. ICT Skills and Capability The use of IT will be integrated into the subject and topic planning of the whole curriculum. In particular pupils will be taught the skills and capabilities required in: Finding things out, developing ideas and making things happenm exchanging and sharing information and in reviewing, modifyng and evaluating work in progress.. In particular all children will be taught to: Use IT as a support for learning on all areas of the curriculum. Develop and extend their IT skills through increasingly complex tasks. Know where the use of I.T. is appropriate and sensible Become confident enough to elect to use I.T. appropriately Select an appropriate software application for a given task. Use a range of hardware, peripheral equipment and software with confidence. Use the computer as a tool to aid their work. Draft, edit and refine work using a word processor. Develop their ideas and communicate these to an audience in a variety of forms such as text, pictures, sound, tables and multimedia, including the use of email and the Web. Collect, enter, store, amend and analyse information using appropriate software. Organise, analyse and present information for a given purpose. Investigate real and imaginary situations through the use of simulation, adventure and modelling software packages. Use IT to solve a variety of problems in a curriculum context. Monitor external events through the use of I.T. equipment. Develop, through practical experience, an understanding of devices used to control systems and events and of the ways in which such systems and events can be controlled. Compare and discuss their own experience of I.T. with its use in the outside world. Progression In order to progress in their IT capability pupils will be taught to: Use software applications of increasing variety and complexity of for clearly defined and appropriate purposes. Develop their skills in using I.T. equipment, operating systems, software and peripherals. Undertake increasingly complex tasks, using greater amounts of data and information. Become more critical of the results of their work, and to check for plausibility in the information generated by software applications in response to their input. Develop increasing sensitivity to the needs of the audience for the information generated and presented using IT tools. Care and respect I.T. equipment and be aware of health and safety issues concerning the use of IT equipment. Staff Development All members of teaching and non - teaching staff will be encouraged to develop their own confidence and expertise in the use of IT through the provision of InSET and personal development both in school and through external courses. Each co-ordinator/year leader is responsible for the I.T. content in their curriculum/year area. The I.T. co-ordinator will support staff in the planning of IT activities into subjects/topics and will advise on the selection and use of appropriate hardware and software. Budgeting A specific budget for IT will be defined to ensure that adeqate levels of hardware, software and training are maintained. The following will be addressed: Hardware - There will be an on going annual budget to cover the purchase of new equipment and the repairs, replacements and upgrades of equipment in the light of new developments. Software - Software will be purchased or upgraded to meet identified curriculum needs and as required by the upgrading and replacement of computer systems. Staff Training - Budget provision will be made to enable all staff to receive adequate and appropriate training. Resources Adequate modern and appropriate hardware, software and peripheral equipment sufficient to enable the delivery of National Curriculum requirements will be available at all times. Hardware and software will be deployed according to curriculum need. Systems and peripherals will not be allocated full time to any one class but will be moved to particular classrooms/teaching areas as necessary. A system for reporting faults and system malfunction and the requisition of repairs will be put in place. Classrooms will be provided with adequate electrical outlets, appropriately sited. All computer systems will undergo an annual electrical safety check. Assessment and Recording Children's progress will be monitored and assessed across the National Curriculum themes at regular intervals in accordance with the school's Assessment Policy. Children will be involved in recording and reviewing their own activities in I.T. The IT Co-ordinator will monitor the teaching and use of IT across the school.
