Judge training

Over the past year I have been training to judge, so with this in mind I thought I would take you through each stage of my training as I do it!! Below is a picture taken with the Northern hamster club with whom I am training to judge other species! Since my interest lyes in mainly dwarfs, that is primarily why I decided I was best suited to dwarfs rather than syrians!!

(Myself on the right and my friend and qualified other species judge Jane martin (honeywellhams)

To begin learning to judge you are taken through a long procedure of 3 book stewardings, and 3 pen stewardings! hence the picture above and below.....

There are 3 main species to judge and they are Chinese, winterwhite, and campbells, with duplicate classes!! Finally,I began my first trainee judging at "penistone dec 2001" which meant I was judging myself with an experienced judge sat with me (Mellissa Chamberlain -Wellingtonhams) in order to pass the training you have to sit with 3 experienced judges and be passed by them!!of course the first experience was a little nerve wracking, but least to say I passed the first of judgings, pictures shall follow shortly as and when I judge!

Hints and tips for showing

If you intend to show a hamster it is best to make sure your hamster is tame in all ways, any hamster that bites can be disqualified,or if jumpy , 1 point can be taken away from the hammie!!Normally most judges give them the benefit of the doubt and give them a few chances!

This tip generally works on dwarfs only, but before enetering them try bathing them in chinchilla sand, it genrally makes the coat look fluffier, thicker and in better condition!

Something I learnt from honeywellhams early in exhibiting,is although you must place one piece of vegetable in the pen, never try to place cucumber in the pen, mainly because when it comes to judging sometimes more often than not there coat looks greasy!!

The best ages to show a dwarf is at a young age,I generally show mine at the age of 4-5months ,breedable age when there at there peak!!At 1 year or over there generally to old to show!!
