We have played KLHCC a good few times now and generally had some close, well matched games - a few wins here, a few losses there. So knowing the standard that we play, it beggars belief that anyone would think it was a good idea to put a couple of league cricketers (they mentioned it once or twice) in the side. You see at this level anyone can call a few of their mates who actually play cricket at a reasonable standard, get them to play low quality Sunday cricket and blow the opposition away - but that wouldn't be much fun, would it?

But it was a little better than that. At one stage in our futile chase we were 6 for 6 (or thereabouts) with these two guys ripping through us with ease, with victory guaranteed did the captain take them off and give some of the lesser (usual) bowlers a go? Certainly not, the big guys wanted a five-for to tell their grandchildren about. So they kept on tearing in until the job was done.

To make matters worse the spirit these guys played the game in was appalling. One of the "league" players smashed his stumps down when he got out and gave sarcastic remarks to any LBW appeal when he was umpiring or even at the non-strikers. To top it off when he was bowling he thought he was Curtley Ambrose running in at the WACA against the Aussies, staring down the batsman and offering ridiculously overblown celebrations, despite the situation of the match. The other guy considered spoiling our only highlight of the match after DC took a great catch by suggesting that it should be six after he threw the ball over the rope in celebration.

Kingston is a long old trek for us and it was a totally wasted day. There was no need for what went on, surely a close game like that which we have had in years past is more enjoyable than that? The fact that they kept on with the bowlers who they knew would be too good for us just makes matters worse. Whilst the day was an embarrassment score-wise for us, it was also one for them in the way they played the game. These are not sour grapes - we have got well used to losing comprehensively and taking it in good humour over the last five years. This was an utterly poor and pointless show on their part - we will not be returning.
