Phillip Thomas Byard Clayton

He was born in Australia on December 12 1885 at Maryborough, Queensland. He came to England when a few months old. He was educated at St. Pauls School and Exeter College Oxford.

In 1910 he went to Portsea as curate.

In 1915 he went to France as Army Chaplain.

He opened Talbot House at Poperinghe where the army men came for peace and comfort. The hay-loft was turned into a chapel with a carpenter's bench as an altar.

Returning to England in 1919 he took over an unused prison at Knutsford to train candidates (many of whom had stayed at Talbot House) to become clergy.

He decided to set up a Talbot House in London under the name Toc H, the army's pet name for Talbot House in Poperinghe.

In November 1922 he became vicar of All-Hallows-by-the-Tower.

In 1925 he made a world tour to raise money for Toc H and its many branches.

Jaki Byard (aka John A. Byard, Jr)

Jaki Byard (born June 15, 1922 in Worchester, Massachusetts, died February 11 1999 in Queens N.Y.) had a classical piano education but was a jazz musician with an enviable reputation, both as an individual artist and as a teacher. He was proficient  both as a pianist and saxophonist. His importance stemmed from his ability to encompass the many different styles of jazz, as well as the quality of his accompaniment of other musicians, such as Charles Mingus, with whom he recorded several albums.
