Licences
Before you can start Driving Lessons you will require:
A Provisional Driving licence, which is in two parts a Photocard and a Paper Counterpart both parts must be brought with you on your first lesson. It is also advisable to carry the Photocard on you whenever you are driving.
You can apply for your licence up to 3 months prior to your 17th birthday or 3 months before your 16th birthday if you are receiving disability living allowance at the higher rate. In order to qualify for a UK driving licence you must be able to read an old style number plate at a distance of 20.5 metres or a new style number plate at 20 metres. New-style number plates which were introduced in September 2001 have 2 letters 2 numbers 3 letters (AB 01 CDE).
You can apply for you provisional licence on line at Direct.gov providing you have a valid digital passport and credit or debit card.
If you prefer you can apply by post using form D1, which is obtainable from most Post offices.
The current fee for your first provisional licence is £50.00, and should be with you in 10 to 14 days from receipt of your application.
