Toshiba V-8600B

Model V-8500 in USA

V-8600B with IR adaptor

Luxury Betamax model with lots of features. Most importantly it has 4 video heads instead of the usual two. This enables it to offer a perfect still picture and slow motion with no white 'noise bar' visible. Picture search is possible at a number of speeds up to 40x normal. Three-event timer even warns you if two events 'clash' or overlap. Sound is mono but BNR (Beta Noise Reduction) is included. This is similar to, but apparently not as effective as Dolby NR.

The remote control is required to operate the slow motion facility. Wired remote was supplied as standard. Infra-red cordless remote control was optional. The VCR in the picture has an infra-red receiver attached on the right-hand side.

This top-loading deck looks a little bit like the Sony C7. Another unusual feature is that if you switch the power on without a tape loaded, the cassette compartment lid pops up automatically, ready for you to insert a tape.

Like a number of Toshiba items, this deck was sometimes sold under the brand name 'GENERAL' instead of 'Toshiba'.
