portable stereo radio / 8-track player
The folding cube design
was a popular
one for portable stereo 8-track players. One half incorporates the radio
tuner and battery compartment, the other half has the 8-track deck mechanism.
The two halves clip together for better portability, but can be separated
to obtain a better stereo effect from the built-in speakers. To keep the
size down, the speakers are small and sound a bit tinny compared to a full-size
home stereo. This Sears player doesn't have a balance or tone control, either
- just Left and Right Volume. There is no headphone socket and no Car Battery
connector - unusually, this unit operates on 9 volts DC (six D cells) or
120v AC.
One good feature is the 4 LED 'Track Playing' display. It ligts up only when the red button is pressed to save battery power.
Electronically this set has been very reliable. I've only had to clean the Radio/Tape selector with switch cleaner - it all works perfectly now. The only problem, common with folding players, is that the clips holding the two halves together break off easily. This makes it awkward to carry because the two halves keep falling apart.
