Who Benefits?

Actors, musicians and presenters use the Technique to help with posture, movement, voice control, breathing and anxiety. The Technique is part of the curriculum at leading drama and music colleges all over the world.

Top athletes use the Alexander Technique to give them the awareness in activity required to improve performance and reduce the risk of injury. It can be useful for any form of exercise, from running and swimming to Pilates and Yoga.

The most common reason why people come for Alexander lessons is pain. Back, neck and shoulder pain (and RSI) is often a result of the way people sit day after day at a desk, computer or in a car.

Back pain is a common experience during pregnancy, as women need constantly to adapt to the changing weight of the baby, and to balance the bump. At the same time, ligaments begin to soften and stretch. Alexander lessons help during pregnancy, labour and beyond, teaching you how to look after yourself whilst you look after your baby.

With its emphasis on “the psycho-physical”, people with problems such as poor self-esteem, depression, anxiety, or those who are involved in personal growth work also benefit from the Technique. “Thinking in activity” brings the experience of being fully alive, alert and “in the moment”. There is often greater calmness, relief from pain and the sense of empowerment from learning how to look after yourself.
