How Do I Learn? |
|
The best way to learn the Alexander Technique is through one-to-one lessons with a qualified teacher. This setting provides a unique opportunity for your individual needs to be addressed. Using explanation and a gentle guiding touch, the teacher will help you re-discover your natural balance. The starting point is to work with simple movements – such as sitting, walking, or bending – things we all do every day. With help, you will be able to experience and observe how your co-ordination works, how you create tension and how you can prevent or release it. What is learned in the lesson situation can then be put into practice in your daily life. At the beginning there is a lot to think about. You are being asked to be aware of how you do things that you have done unthinkingly for many years. With practice, having attention on lots of things at the same time becomes perfectly natural and easy – like learning to drive! The initial lesson lasts for one hour. Subsequent lessons last for 40 minutes. The most effective pattern for a course of lessons is to have one a week initially (say the first 6-10 lessons) and then gradually increase the interval to fortnightly, three-weekly, monthly, etc. A course of around 20 regular lessons is a good foundation for most people. One-to-one lessons take place at my home in Leicester (40 Park Hill Drive, off Aylestone Road) on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. In addition, I also teach short introductory workshops at local colleges and also the Introduction To The Alexander Technique Beginner's Course which comprises seven sessions offering a unique combination of group & one-to-one teaching for up to six people.
