Just what does organic mean? Organic is a buzz word popular in the food industry that informs the consumer that the product is grown naturally with no pesticides or chemical growth enhancements. Most chocolate is naturally organic, the tree does not give itself well to plantation or mass farming, preferring to grow in the shadows of other taller trees. Produced on small family run farms who can neither afford chemicals or have the ability to use them, the cocoa tree is an 'extra' income plant for these basically poor farmers.

| So, why say organic
then? There are exceptions to the rule of course, the Ivory Coast for example does use plantation farming and as the cocoa tree does not fair well in this environment it's growth and care has to be maintained with chemical enhancement. You may also find that in chocolate production other additives in the form of milk and sugar are the product of intensive farming that includes the use of pesticides and chemicals. |
