The Common Lot

The common lot
is flushing out
by cancer, old age, suicide,
while life goes on, why should it not
for all this is the common lot.

And we begin, as others do,
in childhood and simplicity,
but later comes duplicity,
and all such is the common lot.

And there is war and there is pain,
and there's the sad old question Why?
and all who ask it have to die,
for theirs is but the common lot.

And when we die, what then, what then?
Again, again, again, again.

Phil Carradice's commissioned study of Herbert Williams' work will be published by University of Wales Press early in 2010 as part of the Writers of Wales series.

'This book provides a critical survey of his life and writing,' say the publishers. 'It is a combination of biography and critical appraisal and the chapters dovetail together to provide a continuous narrative combined with an appreciation of the man's work … He has always been an eclectic writer, turning his hand to biography and short stories as easily as he does to poetry. What inspires and drives Herbert Williams to keep writing and publishing, in such a wide sphere. What makes him want to communicate his ideas and emotions, often very painful ones at that?'
