Update (May 2006)

After a lot of discussion and experimentation, we have concluded that the majority of orbs are caused by out-of-focus dust, water etc close to the lens of the camera and illuminated by the flash. For more information see here or one of the many other websites around the web. Please also visit our 'false orbs' page, and perhaps try these experiments with your own camera.

Because of this and the ever increasing number of photo submissions we receive, we are now only interested in photos where the orbs have been accompanied by other phenomena, or backed up by data of some kind, or better still where the orb is partially obscured by a solid object. Please do not send us photos taken in the rain, or in obviously dusty environments. Thankyou!

We took our first orb photo, by accident, in June 2001. And we've been interested in them ever since! A Google search shows we are not alone...there are many websites that discuss this phenomenon. We don't have a complete explanation. But we do have a variety of photographs, some observations, numerous questions and hopefully an open mind!

A word about our camera - it's a Fujifilm Digital MX-2700 model and, yes, the lens is clean! We captured orbs both indoors and outdoors, during daylight and at night. Some look like they are partially behind another object (see photos 1 + 2). The orb in photo 6 even shows a reflection of the window that was positioned behind the camera at the time - is this possible? Many of the orbs have appeared around children (we have a young daughter) or in subdued lighting (see photo 5). And although most have involved the use of flash, some have been captured without it.....

The theories we've come across include; a. orbs as a paranormal entity (spirit/ghost/alien) b. orbs as moisture / dust particles lit by the flash of the camera. Whatever they are, they seem to be a particular feature of digital photography. We've tried to recreate them by pointing the camera into the light of the sun (photo 8), but the results are unlike the orbs we normally see. We've also taken photos in dark conditions without flash and have succeeded in capturing several orbs this way (photo 9 for example). And lastly, we've experimented with dust and water and have convinced ourselves that they are a contributing factor (photo 10 shows a dust orb, with flash this time).

But we're still open to suggestions since dust and water don't explain all our observations. Or do they?
