ROCHESTER

In summer 2003 a friend and I spent a day in the picturesque town of Rochester in Kent, and here are my photographic results from an enjoyable outing.

Im Sommer 2003 verbrachten ein Freund und ich einen Tag in der malerischen Stadt Rochester in Kent, und hier sind die fotografischen Ergebnisse von einem erfreulichen Ausflug.

There is a little plaque on the Eastgate House informing us that it was 'Built by the Right Worshipful Sir Peter Buck 1590–1. "Westgate House" in "Pickwick Papers". "The Nun's House" in "Edwin Drood".' I presume that the latter remarks refer to works of the writer Charles Dickens since this building houses a museum about him and his work.

There is also a little plaque on the Restoration House informing us that it was 'Built in 1587. It is said that Charles II stayed here on the night of 28th May 1660 at his restoration. The "Satis House" of "Great Expectations"' – the latter a reference to the well-known Dickens novel.

Es ist eine kleine Plakette am Osttorhaus angebracht, die uns informiert, dass es in 1590–1 vom Recht Ehrwürdigen Herrn Peter Buck erbaut wurde. Ich nehme an, dass die Bemerkungen "Westtor House" in "Pickwick Papers" und "Das Nonnenhaus" in "Edwin Drood" sich auf Schriften des Schriftstellers Charles Dickens beziehen, da sich in diesem Haus ein Museum über ihn und sein Werk befindet.

Es ist auch eine kleine Plakette am Restaurierungshaus angebracht, die uns informiert, dass es 1587 erbaut wurde. Es wird behauptet, dass Charles II hier am 28. Mai 1660 bei seiner Restaurierung übernachtete. Das "Satis House" in "Große Erwartungen" ist ein Bezug auf den bekannten Dickens-Roman.

I found this monk statue rather fascinating. It is equipped with a little plaque that informs us that 'This sculpture was carved from the trunk of a 100 year old Plane Tree by the international sculptor Robert Koenig. The work was unveiled on the 9th July 1997 by Councillor F. Bacon – Chairman Environment Committee – and The Very Rev. E. Shotter'. I think part of its appeal to me is that it looks older (and wiser?) than that.

Ich fand diese Mönchsstatue faszinierend. Es ist eine Plakette dran befestigt, die uns informiert, das diese Statue vom Stamm einer 100 Jahre alten Platane von dem internationalen Künstler Robert Koenig geschnitzt wurde. Das Werk wurde am 9. Juli 1997 vom Stadtrat F. Bacon (Vorsitzender des Umweltausschusses) und dem Sehr Ehrwürdigen E. Shotter enthüllt. Ich finde, die Statue sieht älter aus – und vielleicht weiser?

Part of the castle grounds are surrounded by the substantial remains of a Roman wall that have been underpinned by modern methods.

Das Burggelände ist teilweise umgeben von den nicht unbeträchtlichen Überresten einer mit modernen Methoden untermauerten römischen Mauer.

The huge plaque underneath the lion statue relates the history of a succession of bridges at this place which dates back to the Romans who built the first one.

Die riesige Plakette unter der Löwenstatue schildert die Geschichte der verschiedenen Brücken an diesem Platz; die erste davon wurde von den Römern gebaut.
