Thieves' Guild Gyde

This is a direct copy of the 'gyde' as provided to me late 1999 - My comments added in Italic Face. (Checked Nov. 2001 - You can find a new Gyde in the Guild library)

1) Introduction

The purpose of this guide is to help new members of the Thieves' Guild to get a grip on the exciting possibilities offered by participating in this guild (including getting a grip on others' things). Open this guide to page 2 for a table of contents.

More to come soon! [tm]

3) Advancement

Your level in the Thieves' Guild goes up as you advance certain skills intrinsic to the Guild, known as primaries. You can determine which skills these are by typing: cost primaries while in the room with a Thief NPC. While these skills are most important for a Thief, learn others as well, as they will come in useful. You can advance a skill up to the maximum level that the Guild will teach, which is quite high for the primaries, but will need to go elsewhere for others after you reach the maximum. Within the Thieves' Guild there are also training rooms in which one can advance certain skills by actually using them. To manually advance a skill, you will need to have the required experience and money, and will need to be in the room with a Thief NPC within the Guild. The syntax is: advance <skill, ie covert> by <number of levels> Leaving out the number of levels will advance by one.

4) Specialisation

The thieves guild actually contains a number of specialisations -- prowler, smuggler, cutpurse, safecracker and mugger. The different specialisations have slightly different primaries. All thieves start off as prowlers and up to level 30 any thief may go to Kordane and ask to specialise in one of the other areas. If you wish to remain a prowler you do not need to specialise. If you do wish to specialise, remember to ask Kordane before you reach level 30.

5) Theft

Theft is not only an enjoyable pastime, it is also mandatory when one is a thief (See Page 7). Your targets can be either NPCs (AKA monsters, mobiles), or players, although both you and your target must be registered player killers for the latter. The most important skill to know when it comes to stealing is covert.manipulation.stealing; the higher your bonus is in this, the more successful you will be in your attempts.

6) Fencing Stolen Items

Disposing of your ill-gotten goods is not a problem in Ankh- Morpork. Just about any shop will happily purchase your fine goods from you, assuming of course, that the shop deals in the type of items you're selling. Quite a bit of money can be made by selling stolen items; the Guild naturally expects a cut of the worth of the items you've stolen. Items liberated from a shop can only be fenced. It is in your best interest to keep on the good side of the various fences who will buy your suspect inventory.

In fact you can not sell items stolen to any shop I am aware of. You must fence the goods to one of the NPC Fences such as Jim and Sol who are found in Ankh Morpork Guild. There are others...

7) The Whizz-bang Quota System

The Thieves' Guild expects a cut of the worth of the items you have stolen. It also expects you to steal a certain amount. Both of these amounts vary depending on your level within the Guild. You can obtain a guild licence upstairs in the Thieves' Guild. See Kordane about it. At any time, you can read this card to find out how much you have stolen, how much you owe the Guild, and how much more you need to steal in order to meet the Guild requirements for your level. Not paying the Guild, or not meeting your minimum quota is apt to get you in a lot of trouble (you fortunately won't live long enough to regret it :).

8) Summary

Being a thief in the Ankh-Morpork Thieves' Guild is a rewarding and exciting occupation. We do adhere to 'Honor Among Thieves', and compliance, if not mandatory, is certainly strongly encouraged. Good luck to you in your future endeavors.

10) Leaves of Absence

The Thieves' Guild will grant you a leave of absence if you wish to travel to place out side on Ankh-Morpork. During your leave, your quota will be suspended so that you will have the same amount left on your quota period when you return. To qualify for a leave of absence, you must be in good standing with the Guild. This means that you must not have any outstanding debts or fines, you must have met your minimum quota, and you must not have exceeded your maximum quota. Tell Kordane if you would like to take a leave of absence and he will tell you if you qualify.

Kordane will do other things for you. You can ask him about what skills you need and titles you can obtain. Don't forget Kordane is very hot on good manners so always say your please & thank you's!
