Examinations

We don't just look at your teeth! Gums are just as important, (like the foundations of a house).

Many dentists regard the Dental Examination as a "loss leader". I feel that this immediately compromises your integrity as a preventative practice. We charge a price that reflects the time involved and include any small necessary x-ray's in that price.

At your first visit we will ask you to fill in a confidential medical questionnaire. This is very important for your future care and we also ask you several additional questions.

Q:
  1. Do you suffer from headaches and migraines?
  2. Do you smoke?
  3. Have you ever noticed your gums bleeding?
A:
  1. I draw you attention to the cracked tooth and migraines.
  2. Your answer here is important as we know that smoking masks the early symptoms of gum disease. Also, smokers are more prone to oral cancer.
  3. One of the early warning signs of gum disease is bleeding form the gums around the neck of the tooth.

At the examination we will ask if you have any pain, problems chewing or any appearance worries about your teeth or gums.

The examination we divide into four parts:-

  • The base chart. Everything you have had done to date
  • The soft tissue examination. This is where we check the roof of your mouth, tongue, lips and cheeks for any visual abnormalities.
  • The teeth. Where we check for decay and wear and note any other abnormalities.
  • The gum examination.

Any necessary radiographs are also taken.

We formulate and print a basic treatment plan, sometimes we are able to give you different treatment options.

We prefer to let more complicated treatments develop and will discuss these other options in detail. Particularly as some options may depend on how well your gum disease is controlled.
