Introduction

When I saw the debate on another website, about whether or not the Balrog had wings, I thought - hey, come
on, guys. If it could fly, why did it fall to its doom when Gandalf sundered the bridge? PJ, however, did give the
Balrog wings. So, with music from 'Top Gun' in mind and my tongue firmly in my cheek, I penned this. The tune
is 'Take my breath away', by Berlin. It doesn't exactly follow the verse pattern of the original, but the key changes
and instrumentals are there as indicated in brackets.

The Balrog's Lament by Minto

Squaring up to Gandalf - brother, what a way to go!
Plunging to my death in to the darkened depths below
As I tumble down, I try to find the reason why-y-y
I can’t stay aloft, it doesn’t matter how I try
Balrogs cannot fly

Nothin' in the book, I even had a look to see
PJ did the film, and gave me wings - what cool CG!
But I couldn't cheat my fate I had to die-ie-ie
I can’t stay aloft, it doesn’t matter how I try
Coz I cannot fly!

Spreadin' out from off my shoulders
They came down to my knee
But they never kept me airborne, and that's the tragedy
I went into free fall.... poor me-ee-eee

Even tho' I tried, and I was flapping fit to bust
They just wouldn't give suff-ic-i-ent dynamic thrust
So I have to state, I'm certain of my fate, I'll die!
I can’t stay aloft, it doesn’t matter how I try
Cos I cannot fly!
