Regional Junior Boys Football Competition
Sunday 09 Oct 05 saw a goal-packed day of football competition as the six Wing teams of Central and East Region battled for honours in the Junior Boys football competition at RAFC Cranwell.
The team from Trent Wing, which included five cadets from 195 Sqn, made their way easily to the top of their league by defeating the teams from Herts & Bucks and Beds & Cambs, 2 – 0 and 4 – 1 respectively, and faced Norfolk & Suffolk in the final match of the day.
Norfolk & Suffolk got off to an early lead but were soon levelled after an equaliser from Trent Wing. An unfortunate handball then allowed Norfolk & Suffolk to take the lead once more and despite having to battle against a constant barrage from the fired-up Trent Team, managed to secure victory and the trophy by scoring again. The final score was Norfolk & Suffolk 3 – Trent 1.
As well as their silver medals, Cadets Skudder, Lewis, Booth, Parker and Wiseman will also receive a Wing Blue for their work and Cadets Parker, Skudder and Lewis have been given the opportunity to take things to the next level by receiving invitations to the Regional selection trials at the end of October.

Following on from the successes and valuable training gained from the Inter-Flight Swimming Gala, 195 Sqn attended the annual Trent Wing Swimming Championships held at RAFC Cranwell on Sat 03 Sep 05. This year’s event saw the squadron field competitors in each of the four classes, a notable feat considering that most of the team had only just returned from the Beckingham annual camp the night before.
The level of competition was superb and entertained the spectators and supporters with some memorable, close-fought races. Team 195, under the watchful eye of Team Manager CWO Karl Rhodes, set about their task with vigour and determination and finally walked away with a clutch of medals, two new records and ended the day with a well-deserved 2nd place in the overall competition.
Following on from their success, Cdt Daniel Melin, Cdt Daniel Hannath and Cpl Charlotte Acklam secured places on the Regional swimming team and are due to compete again on Sun 02 Oct 05. Cdt Alex Dellow also secured a place as a reserve for the Junior Boys squad.

Sun 25 Sep 05 saw well over 60 cadets from around the Wing take part in trials for the 05/06 season of Junior Boys football and Senior Boys rugby. The trials were held at the home of Trent Wing, RAF Digby, and also coincided with the Junior Girls hockey trials, which were held in the gymnasium.
After a long, hard day of training, 195 Sqn netted no less than 5 places in the football squad and 1 place on the rugby team!

Grimsby Swimming Pool saw a veritable clash of the titans in the 1st Annual Inter-Flight sporting event of the 05 / 06 season. At the ‘ request ’ of OC 195 Sqn, the newly appointed Flight SNCO’s rounded up their finest to compete in a mirror event of the Trent Wing Swimming Championships.
Five race classes and over 20 races saw ICWO Rhodes and ICF/Sgt Norman raise the newly commandeered Inter-Flight Competition Trophy aloft in triumph at A-Flight’s historic victory over CWO Niles’s valiant B-Flight team.
The evening saw some very close-fought competition and culminated in a nail-biting finale of a ‘ Battle Royale ‘. This Blue Ribband race was organised as a scratch event and became a 16-person-a-side relay race with each swimmer racing two lengths of the pool. As B-Flight was lower on numbers than A-Flight, OC 195 Sqn and Lifeguard and ex-Cdt Matt Stringer were drafted in to boost numbers.
Throughout the race A-Flight were in the lead, at one point by a whopping 1½ lengths, but the grit and determination of the B-Flight ‘bouys and gulls‘ saw the race decided on the very last length with B-Flight winning by a single stroke.
Although the ‘ Battle Royale ‘ result made no difference to the final scores it was likened to winning the 4 x 100m relay in the Olympics – all other results simply fade in comparison! No doubt next year’s event will see both teams equally determined to claim victory.
Special mention and thanks must be made to Mr & Mrs Melin and Mr & Mrs Brocklesby , without who’s support and expertise the event would not have run a smoothly as it did. Thanks also to the staff and lifeguards of the Grimsby Swimming Pool.
