First Presentation of the 195 (Grimsby) Squadron Attendance Cup

Following many years lying forgotten at the back of a cupboard, the 195 (Grimsby) Sqn Attendance Cup has been resurrected by OC 195 and was presented on Tuesday 11 Apr 06 to Cdt Goodwin 3057 for his outstanding attendance record of 97 out of a possible 98 parades.

Cdt Goodwin with his Attendance Cup

His superb achievement was only slightly bettered by OC 195 who attended 98 from 99 parades - the extra night being a staff training session!

OC 195 intends the trophy to be a regular fixture in the awards calendar and it will be given to the cadet who attends the most scheduled parades for each financial year (01 Apr - 31 Mar)

Although not eligible for this year's award, special mention was made of Cdt Mosley 3143(F) who notched up an impressive 54 from 54 since graduating from Holding Flight part-way through the year.

Special note was also made of those cadets involved in the shooting and modelling teams who, in addition to each parade night, also regularly attend the squadron on other week-nights and weekends.

Paintball Update

Bawtry Paintball Fields AKA BPF. Home to a creature, which lurks in the mist, named the predator. Upon two whistles you know he’s in the game.

Beware, for during Red team Vs. Blue team, the predator will strike, and now you have a common enemy. Care must be taken, for the power of the paintball is enough to make the hardest, strongest cadet, Miss Enault, cry.

Shanty Town, The village, Crossfire, The crossing and Treetop Fortress were the scenarios. Crossfire definitely was acclaimed as the most hardcore of all scenes, with its total of 30cm of cover above the ground. Mr Lewis managed to get the flag, before being fired upon by the opposite team. Then, afterwards, I ran across the open to be met by five guns. Blue team opened fire, and I fell down in pain. Later on, Treetop Fortress, 60 feet in the air, housed possibly the best shooting seen on 195. Headshots were made from nearly 100-metre range. Crombie, Dannatt and Steabler, in their own tactical squad, made an attempt to storm a tower, before being promptly shot multiple times.

May we duly note that the final score was 8-0 to Blue team.

Inter-Flight Paintball Challenge

Walking through in single file, each individual being issued with various pieces of equipment, trying not to drop any paintballs which would prove all the more precious (and expensive) later on in the day. As quickly as everyone scrambled to get kitted up and squared away, a marshal called over for a quick safety brief and in as many minutes, tells us to prepare for our first game.

As we arrive at our ‘battle ground’ we are quickly given our game objectives and told to find a starting position. The marshal signals the start of the game with a short single whistle blast, immediately both sides race to gain ground on each other – sprinting around the place not knowing quite what to expect and then diving to take cover behind anything they could find: trees, oil-drums and even old tractor tires. It was good to see some of the cadets using a few field-craft techniques they have learned such as ‘pepper-potting’ and storming huts filled with opposite team members, giving covering fire while team mates make runs for advanced positions etc.

As the penultimate game of the day loomed, many were excited to hear that the Predator would be making an appearance. Funny at first sight, but once he saw you m ove nothing would stand before you and his (twice as powerful) fully automated gun, as most people found out to their own distress - Ouch!

Overall an excellent day out, with excellent facilities and maybe not so excellent food…marked the end of what should be the first (non-official) annual squadron inter-flight paintball challenge!

New "Big Ern" crowned Kingpin

The reign of ASgt Berry as the squadron's top 10-pin bowler was ended on Saturday 11 Feb 06 following the 4th Annual Squadron 10-pin Bowling competition. The latest 'Big Ern' to be crowned Kingpin was Cpl Gray who bowled a 2-game score of 250pts which also won him the individual cadet award. The staff competition was won by the newest member of the squadron exec - CI Andy Muscroft - who beat the Boss by a slim 3pt margin ( much to his annoyance )
