Squadron Hanger Now Open

For sometime now the Squadron Hanger has been closed due to hosting restrictions. At long last, thanks to Cdt Sgt Brock, it is back again. The hanger is a restricted site for use by cadets of 195(Grimsby) Squadron. It contains forums, a live chat room and important squadron notices and information. If you are a cadet of the squadron and wish to access the site please see Cdt Sgt Brock who will give you your username and login.

Cadets Complete Gruelling RAF 2 Day March

On the 9th and 10thApril Sgt Paul Roberts and Cdt Tristan Crombie took part in the RAF 2 Day March as a continuing part of their practice and selection to represent Trent Wing on the Nijmegen Four Day March in the Netherlands. Both cadets completed the 2 day march which was 25 miles each day.

Sgt Roberts said “The march was very demanding, overall it is both mentally and physically demanding but training is paying off. I enjoyed the RAF 2 Day March as I had the chance to meet cadets from all around the United Kingdom and also had the chance to meet military personnel from Air Commodore Chitty to regular infantry men from all over the world including military personnel from Switzerland and Denmark. I would recommend this course to any body who wants to try something new, but be prepared to for the mental boredom and physical pain from blisters and muscle aches.”

Sgt Roberts has been selected as a team member to represent Trent Wing for the Nijmegen Four Day March where he will be marching 25 miles each day.

Squadron Hosts its Annual Model Competition

The Squadron hosted its 8thAnnual Model Competition on the 7th of April. As always the turn out was good as several cadets competed for the honour of being the best modeller on the squadron. Judging the competition again this year was Mr Trevor Snowden, the Public Relations and Development Representative for Airfix, Mr Trevor Snowden had a difficult time deciding which model he liked most and commented on how the judging seems to get harder every year as the cadets skills improve from the training and experience that the staff pass on to the cadets.

The overall winner this year was Sgt Paul Roberts with an outstanding F-117 Stealth Fighter, A joint second place with both models entered by the same cadet went to Cpl Lee Fishwick for his F-18 Hornet and a French Rafael. Third place went to Cdt Ben Bowyer for his B-29 Stratofortress whilst Cdt Darren Briggs was the runner up for his German Tornado in special markings.

Cadets Win Flatline Challenge

The 303 (Worksop) Sqn Flat Line Challenge is the most arduous and physically challenging competition in Trent Wing. The event takes place in Robin Hood country and is run over an 8.5km course. The various challenges are run in the following order:

This ultimate test of endurance, teamwork and most of all, passion has in previous years been won by the host Sqn who have remained undefeated until now. On Easter Sunday cadets Huntley, Atkin, Dannatt, Alzalam, Robinson and Fishwick lead by CWO Rhodes from 195 (Grimsby) Sqn competed against 15 teams from Trent Wing of which only 8 dared turn up.

Their training and preparation paid off as they not only won the gruelling event (having never competed before) but also smashed the existing record time finishing the course together in 1hour and 3mins.

The dramatic finale saw the 195 team that we’re trailing in second summon one last burst of energy to overtake the exhausted 303 team just a couple of hundred metres from the finish point and propel them to victory.

Many thanks to 303 particularly WO Paul Martin for organising Flat Line and we hope to see you again next year.

Book of Condolence Opened for Former Cadet

On the 30th January 2005 a Hercules aircraft, based at Royal Air Force Lyneham, crashed some 30 kilometres north-west of Baghdad. Among the air crew tragically lost in the crash was Flight Lieutenant Andrew Smith a former cadet of 195(Grimsby) Squadron.

Andrew Smith was with the squadron from June 1994 until March 1998. At that time Flt Lt Flint was the squadron's Training Officer, under the command of Flt Lt Lorna Fish. Andrew was promoted to Cadet Corporal in 1997 and went on to pass as a Staff Cadet. He also worked to receive the Bronze and Silver Duke Of Edinburgh Awards.

Keen to become a pilot in the RAF, Andrew started his flying career by being awarded a Flying Scholarship in 1996. He then went on to fly with the University Air Squadron during his time studying for his degree.

In a recent interview with the Grimsby Telegraph Flt Lt Flint said: "I have seen some 500 or 600 cadets go through the squadron. You can't remember them all, but there are memories of people who stand out. It was a shock when I heard the news. He was certainly a character."

"He was a well-liked lad," said Flt Lt Flint. "He'd got it all mapped out. He decided he wanted to join the RAF and he went for it. He was a man who knew his own mind. He was a strong character and strong willed."

Our thoughts are with Andy's Family and the families of the other personnel lost in the crash. The squadron has opened a book of condolence for people to leave their messages, thoughts and memories of Flt Lt Smith. Please click the link below to open the book.

The cadet title was won by Cadet Steabler with Flt Sgt Janney in second and Cadet Enault in 3rd Place. The Cadet Wooden Spoon went to Cadet Cpl Fleming.

An ex-Cadet gets a trip down memory Lane

An ex-Cadet, David Townend now living in Bristol, recently got in contact with the webmaster regarding a book he had just read. The book 'Grimsby-Memory Lane' published by the Grimsby Evening Telegraph shows a picture of 195 (Grimsby) Squadron parading at the Town Hall Square in 1949 being Inspected by HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Even more interestingly the cadet just to the left of the Prince was indeed himself. What a great way to bring back those old memories.
