We have a wonderful selection of greyhounds at Whittingham, both sexes,
all colours and all sizes! Naturally the easy going non-chasers and
pretty little bitches are always in demand. But, when Walthamstow
Homefindng Scheme was first founded almost 40 years ago, I was
determined that I concentrate on the real "workhorse" greyhounds. These
are often large, boisterous old dogs who have managed to escape serious
injury and who have spent their lives giving pleasure and employment to
hundreds of people.

Champ was one of these greyhounds a super dog, still very keen, can really pull on the lead if he gets excited, but sweet loving and gentle by nature, craving affection. He will make a lovely family pet if someone will give him a chance, or he will make an ideal companion for a single person provided he is not going to be left for long periods. Champ is six years-old and had been in kennels nearly a year waiting for his adopter to come along. |
We consider ourselves very lucky with our homing, and home-checkers do a wonderful job vetting suitable adopters and accommodation and we are always provide the full "follow-up" service and help-line so we do not have too many "returned dogs"

However, sometimes things can go wrong and poor Joey was one of our unfortunate failures. We homed Joey and Ada with a lady who seemed very caring and could provide excellent accommodation. After phone calls and a follow-up visit all seem to be going well, but, our second follow-up visit found the dogs had been given away. Ada to a nice young lady who found her far too much of a handful - especially being a single mother with three young children, so Ada returned to the kennel. Poor Joey was not so lucky he was passed onto some men who shut him out of the house and beat him with a broom every time he tried to get back inside. He was picked up on the street and taken the Battersea Dogs Home where he had to stay as the men in question were being prosecuted. We eventually got him back, he was an nervous wreck already and returned traumatised, although happy to be back at the kennels. He is only slowly regaining confidence and we are keeping him as a sponsored dog for as long as it takes until we think he may be able to go to a very specially selected home that will meet all his needs. |
