TINY (83 KB) now known as T-JAY is the largest dog seen at the kennels being 32" high! His owner must have loved him. His best finish was fifth in the lowest grade hurdle. This was because there were only five dogs in the race! His average was sixth out of six - provided he actually finished! The track is however one of the fastest. He is a bouncy, friendly, gentle giant - a joy to walk because he wants to play. He is now adopted but still comes to the kennels daily because his adopter works here!.
-------------------------------- IN MEMORIUM---------------------------------------------
SOLO (88 KB)was originally a racer at Hackney.. He was rescued from a house in Walthamstow where he was abandoned 10 years ago. Originally very dirty, noisy, and inclined to bite, he became mellow in his old age although always really unsuitable for re-homing. He was always so fit with wonderful muscle tone - all his teeth - and beautiful fur. I thought he'd live forever - but sadly he went downhill very rapidly just before Christmas 2002 and had to be put to sleep aged 14 years He was a superb character that I will always remember with affection. ROCKY was the first large dog that I had to care for at the kennels. He is a white with brindle patches dog and was always so friendly and playful while we walked in the forest. He would go absolutely wild if he caught sight of the local deer - pulling me off my feet sometimes! The nicest thing was that he always barked madly when I was around until I had made a fuss of him and he would ignore the rest of the kennel staff. He was adopted by a milkman and spent his days riding around on the milk float with his adopter!. Sadly died 15th June 2002
MAC(94 KB) was only 3 years old in 1998 and a LARGE dog. He refused to chase artificial lures - but he was very keen on chasing live small furry animals. He was always friendly and playful towards all kennel staff but he had been known to be aggressive once towards an adopter. Sadly the aggressive trait became worse (probably due to a brain tumour) and he had to be put to sleep in Nov 2001. KING was an enormous white with black patches dog who had a tragic past. He had been adopted normally and was happy - But one day he was stolen, almost certainly by travelers!! He was found almost two years later lying by the side of the road almost dead from bite wounds (over 80 of them). He had been used for dog fighting! This experience made him very aggressive to other dogs and very possessive about his food which meant that he unsuitable for adoption, although he was not people aggressive. He lived happily at the kennels until he died in his sleep in 1997 aged 13 years.
SMILER was a large speckled white with black patches dog. He was a permanent resident at the kennels and had a lovely full smile for all his friends who were many. He was an excellent runner and his owner kept him at the kennels and visited him several times a week. He was very playful in the paddocks yet walked beautifully. Over the years he developed cataracts and a limp. As the limp was caused by his race injured wrist - he was treated successfully for years for arthritis. Sadly the leg became cancerous and very painful. So his owner helped him on the last journey - August 2001 aged 12 years. TINY (70 KB) was our oldest resident at 15 years old. She used to decide what time she got up or did anything else! She was tiny, almost whippet size, very thin and frail looking - so much so that she always wore a coat to disguise her emaciated appearance and lack of fur! Yet she had regular vet checks from our kennel vet and was in very good health, although incontinent. She reminded me of a little old human woman - bright eyed and into things - full of life. She was an excellent runner in her youth. Sadly she died 9 Jun 2000.
TRAVIS,(40 KB) a brown brindle was one of the few dogs to race at Walthamstow at six years old. Unfortunately soon after coming in for rehoming he developed epilepsy which made him uncharacteristically violent. Sadly died 12 Sep 2000 aged 12 years. HEATHER (102 KB) was 12 years old and her owner came to the kennel every weekend to walk her. She had a bad heart. She was always so pleased to see me when I walked her, A lovely girl. Sadly died 12 Sep 2000
RUMMY (53KB) - was another permanent resident whose owners came every week to take him for walks and to make a fuss over him. He was 13 years old and had lived happily with us for 9 years. He loved to have a girl companion - any age would do!! He was the last of our original residents. Sadly his leg suddenly became grossly swollen and we rushed him to Wanstead Animal Hospital where he was kept in for observation - but he was suffering increasing pain - so it was decided to relieve the pain - I will miss his deep distinctive greeting bark in the mornings.- died 16 Jan 2004. MASCOT(71 KB) was 6 years old in 1999 and a LARGE dog. He was always friendly and a great leaner - absolutely brilliant on a lead when I walked him. But for some reason - probably because he was very laid back - he was not homed. Eventually he was homed to a retired couple. All was very well until they decided to go on holiday - they left him at home with a friend to look after him - When they came home he started to suffer greatly with separation anxiety - So he came back to us and was superb again within a week. The next adoption worked out because the new adopters loved him in spite of his separtion anxiety - He was fine - but his adopters had to remodel their kitchen!!! Sadly in May 2002 he was diagnosed with a cancer and was put to sleep.
MONA (52KB) - was a nice natured black bitch who was five-years-old in 2003. The syndicate who owned her decided to breed her and she had three litters. One of the owners then bought the others out so she could retire happily as a pet. He paid for her to be spayed and visited her at the kennels when he was on holiday from Africa. She was adopted in a lovely home with another greyhound but unfortunately if her adopter left for a few minutes she made so much noise the neighbours complained so she came back. She was very happy here for a few months but suddenly became chubby- we thought the worst that the vet had NOT spayed her!! But sadly she was operated upon and found to have a inoperable tumour of the spleen and was put to sleep in April 2004. It was so sad as her racing owner had done all he should have. I will miss her happy barks in the morning. NANNY (52KB) - was a 15 year-old black bitch who came into our kennels because her owner was terminally ill. She sadly had been very neglected and the rescue organisation who took her thought it best to put her to sleep - but the vet nurse asked us if we would take her. In a couple of weeks she was enjoying life again and happily bossed her kennel companion about. Sadly after nearly 6 months she became very feeble and was put to sleep in April 2004
BRUISER -  (60KB) - was a VERY large black ten-year-old dog, he was being kept in the Kennels by his owners.  He hated vets - children and strangers - but loved those he knew - He bit two vets - Yet he always licked me happily in the morning and was so laid back in his kennel being bossed by a little black bitch called DINKY. Sadly he was diagnosed with bone cancer and put to sleep on Friday 30th Nov 2007
