John Married Elizabeth Taylor 13 days after his divorce from Elizabeth Astill was granted.
The rumor of John having an affair may have been true due to the fact that he married a women from England so soon after his divorce was granted.
In 1900 he was living at 375 (East or West ) on third South, Salt Lake City Utah with his second wife of six years Elizabeth Taylor who also went over from the UK.
Was a labourer at the time of his death, then living at 1369 Union Avenue Salt Lake City Utah.
John Signed his name with a X apparently he could not write.Elizabeth Ann Astill, Age 30 along with her four children , Elizabeth Jane, Age 7, Ann Age 6, Mary Polly, Age 3, and John an infant, left Liverpool UK on Wednesday 3rd Sep 1873, along with 510 British and Scandinavian Moren immigrants on the steamship "Wyoming" Jane Seven Cox, Age 53, Elizabeth's mother- in-law was also on this ship. Nearly all of the passengers were sea-sick during the voyage. Elizabeth was about seven months pregnent and surley must have had a most unpleasent voyage.
John B. Fairbanks was the church leader for the sailing. At about 5 P.M; 2 hours into the voyage there was a mechcanical failure and repairs took two days to put right, having again resumed the voyage, all went well untill the 15th when the ship ran aground on a sand bank near Sable Island, 700 miles from New York, the captain immediately sent the third mate and five crew members ashore to find help.
He also fired several shots and sent up fourteen Skyrockets as singals of distress. he then proceeeded to cast overboard ironware, Telegraph wire and other heavy goods to the value of $40,000. This act together with the incoming tide, lifted the ship off the bank, and it proceeded on it's way by midnight. after having, been stuck in the sand for six houres .
The boat with the third mate and five crew members did not return, it was supposed, as the weather was fair and the sea carm, they had either safely reached shore or that the crew had been taken aboard another vessel.
On the 16th they passed Sable Island at a distance of about two miles with the Island on the left.
After the danger was passed, the elders came together and offered thanksgiving and prayers to the "Great Deliverer" from the threatened danger. Most of the immigrants did not realise the danger to which they been exposed to.
The ship arrived on the 19th at the place of quarantine, near New York and the following day the immirgrants were landed at CastleGarden, the trip had takn sixteen days.
At 5PM the same day the journey was resumed by rail, Via Philadelphia, Pittsburg, Chicargo, and Omaha to Ogden Utah arriving on Sunday ,September 28th. Those who were going south went on to Salt Lake City on Monday, 229th Sep. the trip from New Yorrk had taken ten days.
