OBITUARY

JAMES WILLIAM ARTHUR SKULL 1903-2004.

Bill Skull was brought up in the East End of London and left school at a very early age to take up an apprenticeship in the printing industry. He became a Trade Unionist, a member of the London Society of Compositors, and spent the rest of his working life at Monotyping Services Ltd in Gough Street, just off Fleet Street.

Thus, a great deal of his time was spent in an atmosphere composed roughly of equal measure of tobacco smoke and lead dust, to say nothing of the deafening noise of printing machinery.

A few years before the War of 1939 he moved, with his wife Alice and his two children to West Wickham in Kent. It was during the war that Bill developed a taste for self-sufficiency, turning the whole of this garden over to the production of vegetables, chickens, ducks and rabbits. After the war he continued working in London for some years, then deciding that enough was enough he took early retirement and moved to a smallholding in Pegwell Bay. There Bill continued to lead the "Good Life" until he settled down to retirement proper in Birchington, where he immediately immersed himself in the affairs of the Residents' Association.

Later he moved back to Hayes to live with his daughter Enid and her husband Brian and, on the death of his wife, the three of them emigrated to the Isle of Wight. He continued to keep himself busy with playing chess, stamp collecting, watching the shipping in the harbour, watching the day-to-day happenings in Coronation Street, and doing his own shopping and cooking.

Bill died a few months after his 100th birthday. He is survived by his son Alan, daughter Enid and their families.

Harriett Scull [see No 6 newsletter].

More information has come to light. I received an  e-mail from Australia from a descendant of Harriett. Wayne Johnson informed me that he spotted the mention of Harriett while browsing the internet and looked at our website. It's good to know that the system works! The baptism of Harriet shows that her father Jacob was a soldier at the time of her birth and she was baptised as Harriet Scull Weekes on the same day in 1858 as the next child Louisa Scull. If anyone is going to Kew could you look for the Discharge papers of Jacob ?

                                             FAMILY DAY 2003

Some 60 of us met up at the Family Day in Lyneham U K  on August 9 2003 and enjoyed a great day in the middle of the hottest summer for many years. Perennial visitors Rodney and Neil Pyke from Australia kept up their record of being at every Family day that I have arranged. Guest speaker was Robert Drake Scull from N Carolina USA who filled us in with the Quaker origins of the U S Scull family and their UK origins. Time was given to those who were visiting for the first time to outline their respective family research and for all to explore the family database of records and view the newly produced web site. As on previous gatherings of the family, every one enjoyed the chat, photos and food!

Apologies that there has been no newsletter since before the 2003 Day. Is life getting busier or am I getting slower, or both?

Not much has been done on the website lately both Greg and Christine have had family health problems through the last year.

Norman who maintains the database of records has also been in hospital recently.

This does not mean that nothing has been happening on the Scull/Skull research.

I continue to receive new information from old and new contacts:

Nip Patilla has been researching a branch of the family that moved to Higham, Derbyshire about 1890. George Skull and his wife Ruth nee Tyler came from Seagry and Dauntsey Wilts.

Sally Peace [Scagell] has been researching the Skull family in High Wycombe. She has produced an article about a skeleton in the cupboard!

Cynthia Nunn is an American living in NE England. She was pleased to see such a comprehensive account of the origins of the family.

Look at www.cynthiasplace.net

Several contacts have been in touch having ancestry in Bristol.

I continue to try to link up names and families from the extracts of BMDs that we have. By cross-referencing names on the UK INFO disc I have been able to locate some living Skull/Sculls in UK [including Jersey].

Steve Simpson is looking for information on a man who lived in the Knotty Ash area of Liverpool in the 1950s.He was known as Nick Scull but may have been Charles Scull. Any info back to me in the first instance.

Daphne Thompson has the family census mentions of Skull/Scull since 1841. It is not complete! Can you help to complete this? 1881 is complete! But nothing seems to have been done for 1901 and some other years. To avoid duplication contact Daphne who has a list of completed counties/towns.

OBITUARY

It is with regret that we report the death of Ruth Watson RICE (nee SKULL). Ruth,an active member of the Pill Salvation Army died on 10th March 1998. We remember John and their daughters, Joy and Sharon, in their sad loss.

AN OLD WILL

Barbara SKULL (Hastings ) has sent me a copy of the will of HENRY SCULL .GENT. FOOTMAN TO H.M. GEORGE I I --- WILL PROVED 1719, He left "the sum of twenty shillings " to his daughters (viz) Dorcas Howard ,Mary Tippett and Ann Scull and the rest of his estate "unto my well beloved wife Mary Scull" -----Dorcas Scull m Edmund Howard 1713 and Mary Scull m Matthew Tippett 1711 both at St.Benet Paul's Wharf London, Henry Scull was baptised 1699 at StAnne's Soho. Anyone out there descended from this "gent" ?

1881 CENSUS

A total of 599 individuals in 14 counties can be found on the 1881 census for England and Wales with 556 being found in 112 households .The main groupings of the family at this time were in LONDON, Westbury/Edington, and Dauntsey (Wiltshire), Haworth (Yorkshire), High Wycombe (Buckinghamshire), BRISTOL, Bitton/Oldland and Old Sodbury (Glos),and Ashmansworth (Hants) The 5 families living in Haworth at that time had all moved there from Dauntsey and 2 brothers are on the census one spelt Scull and the other spelt Skull !!. Three others, from Dauntsey, had moved to London and one was living in Cirencester (Glos).

The exodus from the country is further seen with 11 heads of households in the counties of Surrey,Middlesex and Essex having been born in other places including 2 from Trowbridge, 3 from High Wycombe and 1 from Ashmansworth, Edington and Kington. In Rugby (Warwicks) Gideon Delaplaine Scull born U.S.A. is shown with his family.

As mentioned in the last newsletter, Harris and Jessie Scull, both born Poland, were living in Shoreditch (London) in 1881. I have had no response from anyone in UK or USA to my request for any information on this family. Several Scull families immigrated into USA from Central Europe at the end of the 19th century and this family may have come from the same background. Are there any Jewish Sculls in the USA today?

OTHER CENSUSES.

Census returns are taken every 10 years in UK and are available for public inspection after 100 years. The1881 census has been indexed and is on microfiche and is of great use to family historians. The 1841 census had little information with birthplace only noted as born "in" or "out" of the county. The 1851 was, therefore, used by the Family History Societies for their members research but not all FHSs have done as much as others.Wiltshire is completely indexed and I have all the Skulls and Sculls on record. Daphne Thompson (Lee on the Solent) has sent to me the 1851 census for Old Sodbury (Glos) and Hampshire, and I also have Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire.I am now looking at advertisements from FHSs to see if work has already been done on this census in the areas where our family were living 30 years later.Censuses for 1697,1700 and 1701 are in existence for parts of Wiltshire and Scull/Skull entries have been extracted. Are there any early census records for other areas of the country where our ancestors lived?

TV APPEARANCE

On Tuesday May 12 1998 Hannah Skull appeared on the BBC programme "One Foot In The Past". She had been interviewed in connection with an item about the ruins of Bradenstoke Priory. As a girl she remembered the Priory and Tithe-barn being dismantled in 1930 following the sale of the property to William Randolph Hearst. After 68 years the ruins are being preserved by the new owners with the help of English Heritage.Following this TV programme such interest was aroused that a mention was made on Radio 4 and in some of the daily newspapers!

"DOWN MEMORY LANE"

Gwyn Scull has sent me a newspaper cutting from the White Horse News by Bob Savory as he continues his trip into Westbury's past. He writes "Bert Scull was undoubtedly one of the famous characters of Westbury, when I was a lad. Bert was a taxicab proprietor in West End who ran a taxi cab service to the railway station and other local destinations. Bert also had a vehicle which could be changed from a charabanc to a lorry. Bert,an astute business man, was well known for his drainpipe trousers and his association with the local Salvation Army. Bert was assisted by his sons Arthur,Bert and Harry.

Bruce Edward SCULL has a WEB page entitled "The Life of Scull"...featuring "Shaking the Tree" a Family Net-Letter. His E-mail address is -bscull@waterw.com . Bruce lives in Monroeville, NJ USA . In Issue 97.4 Scullink he lists: "Downtown: Early printing in Pittsburg 1786-1856---John Scull and Joseph Hall establish the first printing press west of the Alleghenies. "John Scull PhD Registered Psychologist in Duncan BC Canada. "Scullville Bible Church Home Page --Scullville Atlantic County NJ USA . "Christine Scull-former librarian of Sir John Soane's Museum in London, wrote The Soane Hogarths (1991),edits the Journal The Tolkien Collector, and frequently writes and speaks about Tolkien"and others....

Barbara SKULL has now extracted all the Scull/Skull mentions in the GRO Index up to the year 1930 and has passed her work on to Norman Thompson. Norman's typing finger is now shorter than it has ever been !!.Then will begin the task of, hopefully, linking up many of our UK individuals and families. I am transferring all your records from a card index to my computer Windows Cardfile. I need you now to confirm that the information that I have against your name is correct and up-to-date.

Many thanks, Rodney, for your article about your ancestor, Sarah. I need more like this, please. I need items from you....items about your family, past or present, long or short, particularly from you who are of the older generation, with memories of your childhood. Have you started writing your memoirs yet?

SKULL/SCULL FAMILY NEWSLETTER NO 3 WINTER 1999

NEW CONTACTS

Marilyn Lovell from Lawrence Weston [Bristol]. She has recently started tracing her family ancestry. Her grandfather was Richard George Scull 1867-1929 who married Florence Elizabeth Watkins in 1893. Can anyone with Bristol ancestry give her a helping hand?

Larry Skull has contacted me having read the last newsletter. Larry lives in the USA and is descended from John and Mary Skull who migrated from Slovenia to Canada about the time of WW1.

Beryl Scull of Lyneham, has written to me. Her father Valentine Fredrick Scull was born in Dauntsey. She remembers an American visiting her family home with a book he had written about the Scull family.

Gerald Scull of Surrey writes to say that his father, Henry James Skull, was born in Dauntsey in 1897 but may have overstated his age when he enlisted in the Wilts Regt in 1915.

Pat Dent (formerly Scull) replied to my note of introduction to tell me that her late husband's father left him and his brothers when they were small and they never knew whether he was alive or dead.

Robert Scull, now living in North Colerne, tells me that several of his father's family were in the Police Force. Howard Scull of Bristol says his family has lived in St James. His father was Alfred Harold Victor Scull who married Francis Johns in 1922.One of his aunts had the unusual name of Tryphena.

Georgina Scull of London replied to my note to let me know that she had heard that her ancestors were from Norway.

Betty Whymark of Eltham has Bristol ancestry, and has sent me addresses of Scull names in UK and overseas.

Hilary Collier from Bristol has an ancestor, Hannah Cull who married James Thorne in 1812 in Fifield Bavant. James Cull, also spelled Skull is found in her research.

Tracey Luckhurst of Deal writes that her grandmother has recently died. Myra was the widow of Cyril who was born in Wales.

ANOTHER BEREAVEMENT

Hannah Skull [nee Swarbrick] died in her sleep on 17 December 1998, her 88th birthday. Her long useful life was remembered by her friends and family at a service of thanksgiving at Bradenstoke Baptist Chapel on 29 December.

I have received two potted histories from Dianne Skull and Rene Scull.

At the 1997 Scull / Skull Day Rene gave a presentation of the origins of his line of the family from U K to U S A to Cuba and finally to Venezuela where more than 80 Sculls met for a family meeting.[ 8 A4 sheets]

Dianne lives in Quorn ,S. Australia and has traced her husband's family back to Henry Skull who arrived in 1851. Let me know if you would like a copy.[ 2 A 4 sheets].

SKULL/SCULL FAMILY DAY 2000

SCULL / SKULL FAMILY NEWSLETTER WINTER 2000

The 2000 Family Day is now just a memory but for those of us who were able to attend, it was the best of the three that we have held. The 70 people who attended enjoyed a day of talking, talking and more talking !!!!.Those who were new to family history research learnt a lot from those who have been researching for years. The day started a little after the scheduled time as some had problems travelling. Two displays of Pre-1930 Weddings and World War records were added to as the day progressed. Andrew Jones had produced an account of Sidney Skull who was killed in 1918 in Palestine.

Many of the visitors brought their own folders complete with family trees and their research. After the preliminaries of introduction Sid Skull interviewed Norman Thompson who keeps the database of all the Scull/Skull mentions found. Norman brought along the Dauntsey family tree which covered most of one wall of the building [and continues to grow as more info comes in]. Norman also had produced a visual display of old photographs sent to him before the gathering. Barbara Skull told us about the GRO Index. Over some years she has extracted all the Birth, Marriage and Death entries of the Scull/Skull family members from 1837 to 1950. We have to thank Barbara for her labour of love, a great tool for finding our lost ancestors and relatives in this period. Sid then spoke to Jennifer Topham who had come to man {?} an advice desk. She gave us some advice also on how to get started with our family history research.Lunch was scheduled to commence at 12.45hrs and thanks is due again to Sid and Joy Baker who supplied another wonderful spread. Before we had finished our feast the Press were making their presence known. A group-photo is now a regular feature of our gatherings and makes a good reminder of the Day [and is a good means of reaching others living in the locality of the Wilts Gazette/Times and Western Daily Press]. At 1445 hrs we had the opportunity to hear from our Australian cousins. Dianne Skull had left her homeland for the first time to visit the locality where her late husband Mark's ancestors had lived before emigrating in the 1860s to South Australia. Before returning to Australia Dianne was able to meet Kay Skull from Epsom who's late husband was also descended from Joseph and Hannah Skull of Dauntsey. She has the family Bible. Ed Scull came on a short visit from Perth. Staying with his son in London he was able to visit the capital's research facilities as he looked back for his roots. [A long line of London publicans I understand!]. Neil and Rodney Pyke were back to their 3rd Scull/Skull gathering. Their ancestor Sarah Skull sailed to Australia with her husband and young family in 1850 and settled in Victoria. Rodney filled us in with the Fry family history. Tea, biscuits and celebratory cake followed at 1600hrs. Suitably refreshed we then listened to some who were attending for the first time. Jez Scull from Sussex knew that his grandfather's family came from Wales. He has now been linked up with Pamela Jenkins from Merthyr Tydfil. Bev Scull from Leatherhead had changed his surname from Skull on his father's insistence. He now finds that his Dauntsey ancestors spelt theirs with the "k" !!! Cousins Eric Scull and Betty Whymark, and twins Ray and Keith Scull travelled from Essex. Betty has found out a lot about her line of the family who came from Bristol. Mary Uttridge lives in Market Lavington. She has researched back to Hannah Scull baptised in 1838 in East Coulston. Jill and John Trembling, and Pauline Watson came from Calne. They met up with relations Margaret Snuggs and Anthony Scull. Margaret has the family tree going back through Birmingham. Howard and Janet Scull drove from Bristol. On the way Janet commented that it was odd that they were going to a place where they would know no-one but everyone had the same surname !. It was not long before they found new friends. 89 year old Phyllis Howell [nee Scull], the oldest of the visitors, arrived with Pam Sullivan from Cardiff. They met up with Roger and Susanne Krume from Rugby. Roger's first contact with me was by telephone from the office of Reg Skull's Car Salesroom in Highworth. He wondered if they were related !! It was decided that Sid should spend more time with those who have previously corresponded with him and that, where possible, this should be via e-mail. Another gathering of the Scull/Skull family is planned for 2003.

Is there anyone out there who has access to records in Yorkshire? . Most of the families of Scull/Skulls in modern records in Yorkshire seem to have moved into the county during the 1860-1880s, but the IGI shows three mentions before those dates.

Baptisms

JOHN SCULL 03 JUNE 1821 Swinefleet Yorks Son of John and Mary Scull

WILLIAM SCULL 19 APRIL 1858 Eston Yorks Son of William and Sarah Scull

WILLIAM SCULL 11 March 1810 Selby Yorks, Son of Marmaduke Scull.

There is no mention of this family on the GRO Index for a marriage or for the children's births. Are these people all members of one family line and from where did Marmaduke originate?

SCULL / SKULL FAMILY NEWSLETTER 2001

This time we read about the part of the family who have lived in Ashmansworth, Hants UK for many generations, of B M and Ds, a SKOLL variant surname and of new contacts on the internet.

Thanks are due again to Barbara for the latest batch of GRO Index entries up to the year 1965 most of us are now on these entries

I heard in the autumn from Barbara CROOK of Billericay to let me know that her husband Brian had died in February. Brian was one of my first contacts in Family history and, like me, traced his ancestry back through the Wiltshire village of Dauntsey.

Beryl SCULL of Lyneham, after years of poor health, has also recently died. She was the daughter of Valentine Fred SCULL. She had written to me about her life. She remembered a visit of an American [probably the genealogist William Ellis SCULL] to her parents home in Brinkworth and how he left a book with them about the Scull family.

Mary Uttridge has found the following SCULL entries in the Westbury [Wilts] baptism register

1556 Apr 30 Robert s Thomas of Lye

1560 Apr 28 William s Thomas of Lye

1566 Oct 18 Richard bbs of Margery of Lye

Thanks to the National Burial Index Barbara Skull now has the burial details for Thomas and Mary [Clark] SKULL of High Wycombe,Bucks. All we need now for this side of the family is the baptism of Thomas, age at death would put the baptism circa 1750…could be London, could be Bristol, could be Ashmansworth, could beWiltshire, could be Norfolk [yes Norfolk !!] in fact it could be anywhere…contact Barbara at barbara.skull@talk21.com if you can help, or drop me a line or give me a ring….

ASHMANSWORTH.

Among those whom I have met who trace their ancestry to the village of Ashmansworth are Ivor Scull, Brian Scull, Marian Payen, and Tony Scull [ Ilkley]. I have also corresponded with Philip Grey, Jenny Russell [Australia], Grant Talbot [ USA] and Mike Talbot.

Tony has worked on the records [that still exist] and has produced charts of the different lines of the family.
These are very comprehensive and the first thing I do when I have a new contact with Ashmansworth ancestry is to look up these charts and the second is to ring or e-mail tony_scull@lineone.net Other families that
have married into this family include TALBOT { Lydia Scull m Thomas Talbot 1818 } ETWELL { Jane Scull m Edwin Etwell 1868 } HAMMOND { Elizabeth Scull m William Hammond 1838 } MONK { Sarah Ann Scull m
–Monk c 1800 }

Early parish records do not exist. In 1810 a fire destroyed the parish clerk's cottage and the church records that were housed there, so the earliest mentions on Tony's charts mention that the relationships cannot be verified.
Chart 2 shows descendants of Isaac SCULL who married Ann Challis 1814.

Chart 3 shows descendants of Isaac and Ann SCULL's son John who married Hannah Elliott in 1862

Chart 4 shows descendants of Alexander SCULL who married Mary Head circa 1788.

Other Hampshire parishes where SCULL/SKULLs are mentioned in their records include Combe [now in Berks], Faccombe, Hursley, and Heckfield.

US genealogist William Ellis SCULL in his booklet "The Family of Scull" 1930 p18 mentions, in connection with early findings of the surname, that 'the [Herefordshire] family were connected with Berkshire as early as 1499 when William SKULLE and John SKULLE and Joyce his wife bought lands in Clewer and elsewhere {F. of F. Berks, 13/88, No 33}'.

P19 'In the village of Ramsbury, [Wilts] a village……….on the borders of Berkshire….Edward or Edmund SKULL appears in 1595 aged 56….Thomas SCULL from 1576-1619 and Elizabeth in 1571'.

The mentions of Ramsbury I have not been able to substantiate from any other records.
Gideon D SCULL in his booklet 'Genealogical notes on the family of Scull' 1876 has only one mention of Hampshire

Walter son of Richard and Dorothy SCULL of Much Cowarne, Herefordshire, died in Winchester circa1667."p7.

LOST GRANS AND GRANDADS…A LOST GRAN by Celia Cox, 2 The Firs, Pinfold Lane, Wheaton Aston,STAFFORD ST19 9PDcelia_cox@hotmail.com

I started researching my Mother's maternal line a few years ago. My mother was then still alive and knew hermother's birthday. I confirmed her age from her marriage and death certificates and started confidently searching the St Catherine's indexes for her birth. Ada SKOLL, born 16th March 1876 should be easy to find- an unusual surname and exact date of birth- but she was not there.

Less confident I searched five years either side of the expected year- no luck. We knew that she had a brother very close in age, Ernest, but he was missing too! In fact I found no SKOLLs at all.

The only other information we had about the family was Ernest's father's name- George SKOLL- from my grandfather's marriage certificate and an inventory of his effects sent home from India after his death inBombay in 1890.

My mother was particularly puzzled by her missing parent- perhaps the children were born in India, but her mother had always boasted of being a Cockney, being born within the sound of Bow Bells. Then my father had a brainwave. Although we had completely lost touch with brother Ernest, we knew that he had lived in Newport,Wales. Dad looked in the Newport telephone directory and wrote a letter to the only SKOLL listed. A reply soon came and we had guessed right- it was from Ernest's grandson. He gave details of Ernest's family
and asked if we knew his grandfather was born Ernest SKULL-the family having changed their name during World War 1 because it was too German sounding. Just the information we needed although we knew the
name change was pre 1890-not World War 1.

Back to the indexes and in no time at all I had both birth certificates but SCULL not SKOLL or SKULL. Oddly my mother also had the wrong birthday-1st April not 16th March. My mother was infallible about birthdays,
she knew the whole family by heart and would certainly not forget her own mother's. Why had my grandmother celebrated her birthday on the wrong day and never told her children of her name change? There was no birth certificate in the house when she died- my uncle had kept all the certificates and he was quite
sure it was not there. She was born in London but in Kensington. Bells must have travelled a long way in those days!

I still wonder why the family changed their name. It must have been a deliberate change, not a transcriber's mistake as all the records pre 1876 are SCULL and all the records post 1890 are SKOLL. Did they have something to hide? I am also tempted to think my great grandfather invented the name SKOLL as I have not met it elsewhere. I would be pleased to hear of anyone else with the name or are Ernest's descendants the only people called SKOLL.

Colin SCULL, 54, a Newquay sculptor, was so moved by the TV images of the September 11 atrocities that he wanted to carve an abstract monument to remember those that had died. Colin, contacted the Joint Maritime Facility at RAF St Mawgan, which has a large American contingent, and met with Captain Walter SCULL III to show him a plaster model of the proposed monument [from Cornish Guardian 29 Nov 2001].

Ron PONTING of Earley , Reading UK has sent me a family tree on his mother's side [ Margarita Restall ]. He is looking for information on his Grandmother's family Selina Skull who married Edwin James Ponting . She died in Swindon Wilts in 1923. SKULL/SCULL NEWSLETTER NO 6 AUTUMN 2002

The 2003 Family Day has been arranged for Saturday August 9 in Lyneham, Wilts. UK. Plans for the day are taking shape, a speaker has been invited, displays are being put together... in our minds.... and we need YOU to be there.
Please reserve the date and reply with your intention to join us ASAP.

SCULL contacts SKULL in Australia.
Ed Scull e-mails from Perth to say, among other things, that he has telephoned Alan Skull in Melbourne. I lost touch with Alan some years ago. It seems that Alan has been in UK and has now returned to Australia.
Ed has also sent me details of Harriett Scull found on the Unassisted Passage for New South Wales. 1871
Harriet Scull aged 19 single female, servant.
From Cirencester, Gloustershire [sic]
Father Jacob Scull deceased
Mother Mary J Scull from Cirencester
Religion CE
Read and write both
Relations in colony none
Health good
I am keen to find any one related to Harriett from UK or Australia. I think she is on my side of the tree but GG Uncle Jacob was in Cirencester on the 1881 census !

SKULL AND SCULL FAMILIES IN BRISTOL,SOMERSET AND GLOS.

Skull or Skull families have lived in the Bristol area for many generations including some of the earliest records in the villages of the Severn Valley....NICHOLAUS bap 1609 in Berkley, MARY dau of Richard bap 1618 in Slimbridge,
Bitton area has been the home for one branch of the family which may be the oldest in the area...EDITH m Roger Pyther in 1592
Old Sodbury is the home for another but this line originates from Thomas born in Wilts circa 1788
Bath was where Jacob had a pork producing business.
Cheltenham was where another Jacob lived...also from Wilts.
Somerford Keynes, a village just over the Wilts border, was where a clan lived including Olive Skull.
Bristol has had several strains of the family as should be expected of a city of its history and size. Arthur Scull had a thriving Plumbing and heating business here.

This is just an outline ....it needs a volunteer to collect and put in to order all the information held on these and others so that family trees can be formed for the "get together" in 2003.

DEATH
TREVOR WALTER JAMES SKULL passed away on June 16 2002 aged 74 years sadly missed by his family, Doris, Kevin and Christine, Linda, Michael, Kelly and Nicola.

Two Fry Brothers Married Two Skull Sisters.
Chris Fowler of Wimborne, Dorset informs me that her grandfather's brothers Jim and Jack Fry married two Skull sisters [Gladys and Alma ] from Dauntsey, Wilts. She doesn't know much about the Fry/Skull connection and is interested to know how the brothers met the sisters. She adds that the Dauntsey parish registers show that the spelling was either with a K or a C and that the same individuals could give a different spelling, depending on what they felt like at the time !.

Yorkes---250 years carpenters, Joiners and More.
Swindon Records......
"In the churchwardens' accounts for 1737 Jasper Yorke was paid for timber and work to the Skull-house £2-13-6. "
Any ideas whether this was something to do with a graveyard/funeral business or Mr Skull's house ?

WILL SCULL .....A Pioneer of Socialism.
In the June issue of the Journal of the Bristol and Avon FHS Patricia Lindegaard described how she rescued several items including a photograph of Will Scull.
William Higgs writes to the editor in the Sept issue:
" It is my belief that the photo is of Billy Scull who had a Newsagents shop in Titchborne Street, Barton Hill, Bristol .I was born at 37 Morley Street a short distance from his shop in August 1922 and lived there until I reached the age of 15. Our evening paper was delivered by his son who did the deliveries riding round on a motorbike. The same Billy was a member of the City Council. I can see him now in my mind, no collar to his shirt but a scarf around his neck and the ends tucked into his braces. Many a comic I have bought from him.

Spotted in the Wilts and Glos Standard 19 Sept 2002.
" A second shop in Malmesbury's Triangle has closed its doors. Triangle stores owned by Dave and June Scull, shut last week after 9 years in business "

> Hello Sid,
>
>
> My wife is descended from William STRAWBRIDGE. His descendants were
> shipwrights, ship pump makers, and mariners, many of whom (including my
> wife's line) moved to South Wales in the early C19th.
>
> Ancestor William STRAWBRIDGE's baptismal record has not been identified
but
> a 1794 Apr 25 St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol, burial record for William aged
34
> suggests he was born 1759/60. He was very likely the son of John
STRAWBRIDGE
> and (Sarah) Jane SKULLS who married in December 1759.
>
> The St. Mary Redcliffe parish register included the marriage of John
> STRAWBRIDGE and Sarah SKULLS by banns performed by Mr. Giles Dec 9, 1759.
No
> signatures or witnesses or other information was entered.
>
> The St. Mary Redcliffe marriage register also includes the same 1759 Dec 9
> marriage, but of John STRAWBRIDGE to Jane SKULLS. Banns were published
Sept
> 9, 16 and 23, 1759. They were married by Sam GILES, curate, in the
presence
> of Tho. COULSTRING. Coulstring is listed in numerous marriage entries and
> was presumably a parish clerk or official. Bride and groom were both from
> the parish and made their marks not signatures on the register.
>
> Was John married to Sarah or Jane? The parish register was usually the
> working every-day record and therefore more likely to contain current (=
> more accurate?) information than the separate marriage register, which was
> often compiled from the actual register at some later date. However, the
> more complete marriage register entry suggests that in this case the
> marriage register entry is more reliable. Also, the banns and Bishop's
> transcripts referred to Jane not Sarah. Secondly, there is no subsequent
> reference to Sarah in the Redcliffe registers but there are entries for
John
> and Jane:
>
> St. MARY REDCLIFF
> BAPTISMS
> 1766 May 4: Ann, d/o John & Jane STRAWLAND
> 1770 Aug 7: Maria d/o John & Jane STRAWBRIDGE
>
> BURIALS 1716-1826 for STRAWBRIDGE
> 1794 Aug 19: John aged 78
> 1794 Apr 25: William aged 34
> 1800 Dec 28: Jane (no age given, although an age for all other entries in
> that time period)
>
> If the relationships and ages suggested by these events are correct, then
> 1) John (1715/6 - 1794) was about 44 when he married in 1759.
> 2) Jane, with a child in 1770, could not have been born much before 1725
or
> later than 1745. She would have been 15 - 35 when she married and 55 - 75
at
> death.
> 3) there may have been a significant age difference between John and Jane
> (at least 10 but maybe as much as 30 years). Perhaps one or both had been
> previously married but there is no indication of widowed status in the
> marriage record.
> 4) The 3-month delay between the marriage of John & Jane in December 1759
> and the reading of the marriage banns on consecutive Sundays in September
> 1759 is perplexing. Perhaps some circumstance delayed the marriage:
> William's birth or might John have been at sea?
> 5) William was aged 34 according to his April 1794 burial record,
suggesting
> a birth date in the first quarter of 1760 or in 1759. His missing baptism
> record might indicate an illegitimate birth (as William SKULLS not
> STRAWBRIDGE) or that the family was temporarily away from Bristol (at sea
or
> overseas?).
