CoffeeRoastDB
Troubleshoot

Things to try first:

All Operating Systems

This program requires permissions to rename the example database and to write to its embedded database.  The easiest way to achieve this is to install the programs to your home folder for Linux and your Documents folder for Windows.

Windows Operating System

Windows plays tricks with file paths in some folders such as \Windows,  \Program Files

If you are using Windows and having problems please expand the compressed file to C: as C:\CoffeeRoastDB if it works in this location then the above is the problem

Linux Operating System

Linux users may find that they can not print from the program.  In this case the printer setup dialog will not display and printing will not take place.
This is due to a known problem with the Java SE JRE on Linux.  It was fixed in JRE 6  version 1.6 update 10.    Installing this or later updates will fix the problem.

If you still have a problem after trying the above please navigate to the installation folder and attempt to run Troubleshoot.jar. The way you run a .jar file depends on your operating system and how you have installed Java.  Try in this order of preference:

  • double click the .jar file
  • right click the .jar file and select run with Sun Java 1.6 (or above)
  • Open a terminal (Command Prompt on Windows) navigate to the installation folder and enter

 java –jar Troubleshoot.jar

If you can not run Troubleshoot.jar open a terminal (Command Prompt in Windows) and enter the following:

Java –version

You should get a response similar to:

java version "1.6.0_07"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_07-b06)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 10.0-b23, mixed mode, sharing)

If the version is less than 1.6 then you need to update to a more recent version of Java.  If you have installed version 1.6 or above but the reported version is still less than 1.6 you need to make the latest version your default version of Java.  How this is done varies for different operating systems.  Currently it is necessary to take this step with Mac OS X which still uses Java version 1.5 as the default.  For Mac OSX set Java version 1.6 as the default version by running  /Applications/Utilities/Java/Java\ Preferences.app/Contents/MacOS/Java\ Preferences .

If the version is 1.6 or greater please navigate to the installation folder and enter the following:

Java –jar Troubleshoot.jar

If the Troubleshooter will not start

You have a problem I can not help you with.  You could try reinstalling Java and/or running other unrelated .jar files.

If you can run the Troubleshoot.jar but not the CoffeeRoastDB.jar

If the troubleshooter detects a version of Java below 1.6 it is not possible to run these database programs.  Please Google on installing Java SE Runtime Environment version 6 for your system.  If you have installed version 1.6 or above but the reported version is still less than 1.6 you need to make the latest version your default version of Java.  How this is done varies for different operating systems.  Currently it is necessary to take this step with Mac OS X versions below 10.6 which still uses Java version 1.5 as the default.  For Mac OSX versions below 10.6 set Java version 1.6 as the default version by running  /Applications/Utilities/Java/Java\ Preferences.app/Contents/MacOS/Java\ Preferences .

If the troubleshooter detects the required version of Java it will enable a button to allow you to attempt to run the program. Click the button and wait for the program to start or to fail. If the program fails please copy and paste the contents of the two windows (top window system data, bottom window program output/error messages) into a PM and send to me. I will then try to identify what the problem is.
