As It Was

Two refurbishments have taken place at The Markeaton, one in the mid-1980's and a further in the early 2000's. The former kept the original bar unchanged with the Smokeroom & Lounge receiving minor structural alterations which gave a much needed, more pleasant feel to the atmosphere of the two rooms. The latter saw a major change to the whole internal structure that changed forever the original 1936 design and is now as we see it today. Below are a selection of photographs taken on the 13th September 1982, a last look at how the original design survived for some fifty years.
