Arts and crafts activities at
'Jigsaw' After School Club
|
Jigsaw
Jigsaw is an after school facility.
It is open on Tuesday - Friday, from 3.30pm until 5.15pm for arts and crafts, internet access and training, support with homework and a chance to speak to trained youth workers.
Recently we have also introduced a Health element into our work, which has meant that there are cooking sessions each Friday. The young people decide together what they would like to cook, prepare the food, and then discuss various nutrition issues whilst eating the meal. Food safety and hygiene is highlighted at the start of each session, and during the sessions. Groups of 4 or 5 young people have participated in the sessions each week and have shown real enjoyment and enthusiasm for what they have done. Many have used the skills learnt and tried out the recipes later at home.
There has also been work particularly focused on promoting Health Living during Jigsaw sessions, which has included providing healthy eating options, providing free fruit-tasting sessions, and doing creative writing around the subject of healthy living.
This term
In May, The London Mozart Players visited the club to do a "Make a Disc" Workshop, as part of Make Space's involvement with the club. The young people were given time to make some music or practice a song, and then went into the studio to record their work. This will then be put onto a cd for them and sent out to the young people. The young people thoroughly enjoyed the session and learnt new techniques, as well as being able to use equipment that they had never used before.
